Let's all clap hands for Charlie

Today The Times announces the 55th birthday of lifelong Charlton fan, author and broadcaster Charlie Connelly.

For over ten years Charlie lived in Deal, but perhaps it was encounters with Desmond from Deal that finally drove him to live north of the border: https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/lifestyle/5285243/charlie-connelly-on-his-love-for-dundee/

Charlie was a contemporary of my middle daughter at uni.   She retired with her husband to a farm in Spain as she approached 50 (now joined by my granddaughter and great-granddaughter) and always reminds me that she is a multi-millionaire rather than a mere millionaire. Actually, I never managed to get Charlie's book on radio back off her.   However, he is best known now for his one man show on the shipping forecast.  It always sells out.

Charlie's early books included one on the Liechtenstein national team (which I really enjoyed) and also one on football in London.

I once asked him if he had ever played football competitively and apparently once he was drafted in by a non-league reserve side short of players.   He was out of puff after 30 minutes.

Charlie still has to make the decision which of the Dundee teams to back in his new home.

Greenwich Uni betray Charlton

Greenwich University have for a long time been aligned with Charlton but now they have formed a partnership with Crystal Palace: https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/25397074.university-greenwich-partners-crystal-palace-fc/?ref=rss

A lot of claptrap is spouted about their core values aligning, but Greenwich is our home borough.  And as someone who was born in Greenwich, I take particular offence.

Towards the end of my career a West London university offered me a six figure salary to take a senior position.   If it had been Greenwich I would have accepted and then there would have been a partnership!

Three clubs interested in Chuks

There are reports that Wycombe Wanderers are interested in signing free agent and former Addick Chuks Aneke: https://the72.co.uk/2025/08/19/wycombe-wanderers-offered-chuks-aneke/

Chuks is the sort of player that the Chairboys like, but Burton Albion are also interested and St. Mirren are said to be prepared to offer him the kilt.

Wherever he ends up, the 32-year old will provide work for the club's medical department, but good luck to him.  He did his best for us.

Leaburn farewell

Today we say goodbye to Tracey Leaburn as Head of Player Care.  She has provided 10 years of great service to the club, not least in staying put at The Valley as one of a trio who stood up to individuals who were a great threat to the club's existence.  The surname Leaburn is legendary at Charlton and I wish her every success and happiness in the future.

I only met fellow blogger Dave Thomson (Drinking During the Game) once when Murray mints called in all Charlton bloggers for a meeting.   That was at a time when the blogsphere was more populated and of greater importance.

Dave sadly passed away in 2023 from cancer and his daughter Heather is undertaking a 30 mile walk to raise money for cancer research: https://www.castrust.org/2025/08/sponsor-heather-thomson-in-memory-of-her-father/

Football is more than the game itself.  A few days ago I made a routine visit to my chiropodist.   She is a keen Villa fan (season ticket holder) and we usually talk football, but she was more restrained than usual.  Then she revealed that her father whom she went to games with had passed away and she couldn't raise her normal enthusiasm for the season.

Gasman scores

Shortly after coming on as a late substitute for Stevenage yesterday, Gassan Adahme scored in their 2-0 victory over Northampton.   The Gasman scored 90 seconds after coming on and sent Boro to the top of the League One table.

On 82 minutes the Boro No.10, Dan Kemp, put the ball into the channel for the Gasman to hook across the keeper who was stretching.

Give us a K: one of Team Lisbie, Kyreece, contributed to Colchester's 2-0 victory at Shrewsbury with a late goal.

Charlton in 8th place

Charlton are 8th in the Championship after a creditable 0-0 away draw at Bristol City (Millwall are 15th).  The home side dominated the first half with the Addicks relying on counter attack.   Charlton came more into their own in the second half with Apter having the best chance of scoring.

It’s nearly nine hours since the Addicks last conceded in a league match (including play-offs).

In the first half Charlton were defensively very organised and work so hard to press. City had a few moments when they've got into good positions but Thomas Kaminski was protected very well. Keeper only had the one save to make from Hirakwa's shot from the edge of the box.

City were doubling up on Rob Apter every time he got on the ball. With good reason.

Apter forced Bristol City keeper Vitek into a save low down to his left after being fed on the right of the box by Carey.   Clearest chance either side produced, although Bristol City's Anis Mehmeti hit the woodwork in the second half with a well-struck effort.

Kayne Ramsay was excellent .   He made a fine block to cut out Hirakwa's cross and also produced a couple of crunching and perfectly-timed sliding challenges.

Nathan Jones was going ballistic towards the end of the match about some of the officials' decisions.

As the game went into seven minutes of added time, Charlton summer signing Harvey Knibbs had a close-range chance smothered by VĂtek.

All future reports will appear on Addick's Championship Diary.

Is this Bristol City's season?

Bristol City are on their 11th season in the Championship and hav have always fallen short of promotion: https://footballeconomyv2.blogspot.com/2025/01/parachute-payments-make-life-difficult.html

Owner Steve Lansdown* is getting increasingly frustrated and has indicated his willingness to sell up.

For a city of its size Bristol has punched below its weight in football terms.   It does have two clubs, although when Charlton negativists say we are a laughing stock, the Gasheads always come into mind.

What strikes me is that the fans of both clubs are a bit odd.   There has been trouble between Charlton and City fans in the past.   Some years ago a Gashead I know slightly offered me a lift to a midweek fixture against Charlton.   I declined being pretty sure we would win and he would take it badly.   We won 5-1 and he confirmed that he would have left me in Bristol.

Of course, Bristol is in a strong egg chasing area and Bristol City are also heavily involved in rugby union.

Four Four Two reckons they will finish 12th.   They think City have an energetic squad but lack the top end quality hat would secure them a play off place against richer rivals.

Having said that, City beat Sheffield United 4-1 away last week, although I suspect that was as much a story about the Blades post Chris Wilder as ir was about City, although they were keen to avenge their play off semi-final defeat there, losing 6-0 on aggregate.   Neither defence looked solid in last weekend's game.

This is a big test for Nathan Jones and his side, but we will do well to get a point.   At least moaners will be able to come up from under their stones.

*Of Hargreaves Lansdown, the Bristol-based  funds supermarket.   I have been a client since the 1980s and have been very satisfied.

Fans remain calm as Ahadme departs

Gassan Ahadme has joined Stevenage on loan. Nathan Jones had said yesterday at his press conference that outgoings were in the pipeline. The former Ipswich Town striker has not featured in the matchday squad for any of their competitive fixtures. Minimal game time over pre-season as well

Rodwell on Ahadme's loan to Stevenage: "Gassan was desperately unlucky. We know we signed a good player when we signed Gassan from Ipswich last year. He was desperately unlucky with injuries, some of them were really quite freakish. "We are well-stocked in that position. Gassan is here with us on a long-term contract. He needs to go. He needs to score goals, which I am sure he will do.

Stevenage have started very, very well in their league campaign and they really wanted to do the deal. "These things take time. Players need to work out if it is the right deal for them and we have got to agree a deal with Stevenage. These things don't happen as quickly as I would often like. "Hopefully it will be a really good move for Gassan and he'll score a lot of goals."

The news has been received calmly by fans.    Thanks for all you tried to do and good fortune in finding your level at Boro.

Cup victory for Charlton

Charlton comfortably beat League One side Stevenage 3-1 to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.   Miles Leaburn calmly slotted the Addicks into the lead before Ibrahim Fullah doubled the advantage with a goal on his first start for the club.  Luke Berry made the game safe as he headed in the Addicks' third after the break.

Having beaten Watford 1-0 thanks to Harvey Knibbs' late winner on their return to the Championship on Saturday, Nathan Jones gave his goal scoring signing his first start since joining from Reading.

Knibbs was one of 11 changes with Joe Rankin-Costello making his debut alongside Fullah at The Valley.

Leaburn, who scored 10 goals last season as Charlton won promotion via the play-offs, opened his account for 2025-26 as he slotted in Isaac Olaofe's pass after Dan Phillips had given away the ball.

Nine minutes later, Fullah made it a debut to remember as he outmuscled his marker to shoot home Henry Rylah's cross into the bottom corner.

Dan Kemp blasted over for Stevenage shortly after the break, while at the other end Taye Ashby-Hammond was on hand to keep the ball out after Berry had redirected Rankin-Costello's shot towards goal.

Berry did find the net soon after as he stooped to head home Daniel Kanu's cross to seal matters.

But Stevenage finished the tie strongly and cut the deficit when Freestone headed in Jasper Pattenden's cross before Phoenix Patterson forced a good save from Will Mannion.

Charlie Kelman saw a stoppage-time effort deflect just wide for the Addicks as they progressed to the next round.

Richard Cawley reports Nathan Jones praised Isaac Olaofe for the assist that led to Miles Leaburn's opener for Charlton  last night but also talked about the summer signing 'over-thinking' a good scoring chance in the first half.    Jones was also very bullish on Danny Hylton stepping up his coaching responsibilities following the departure of James Brayne to Sunderland.

Let's keep momentum going in cup clash

One of the few downsides to Alan Curbishley's tenure as a manager is that we didn't take cups seriously.  I always thought that a solid Premier League side should have a punt at the league cup.

Obviously Nathan Jones will use tonight's Carabao Cup game against Stevenage as a way of giving minutes to players who didn't feature on Saturday or only as late substitutes.  Nevertheless, a win would give us momentum and offers the prospect of a later round tie against a top flight club.   The money comes in handy as well.

Having finished 14th in League One last year, Stevenage are forecast to finish 15th this year by Four Four Two.  They state: 'Let by Carl Perigianni. Borough had a top eight defence last term, but there's no loan star Murray Cooper in goal any more and the attack lacks guile.   Both the midfield depth and manageroal set up look strong. however.'

The fan quoted says, 'The football isn't always amazing.'

Please note that after Saturday reports will appear just on Addick's Championship Diary

Fanzine editor blanks Super Hoops fan to go to The Valley

Voice of the Valley editor Rick Everitt may have been engaged in a spat with Tory free speech fanatic Lord Toby Young.  This was supposed to end with pistols at dawn with the hapless QPR supporter on Margate beach, but Everitt had better things to do with his time.

Silent for a long period, the fanzine editor has found his mojo with positive vibes from yesterday's gane and whole experience: https://www.votvonline.com/home/the-2025-26-blogs/10-9-addicks-on-a-winner-even-before-late-strike/

Championship campaign starts with home win

A time added on goal by Harvey Knibbs gave Charlton a 1-0 opening win in the Championship at The Valley this afternoon.

It was a frenetic final few minutes with Watford feeling they should have had a penalty when Thomas Kaminski crumpled Nestory Irankunda.

But on balance, Charlton carved out the better of the chances and could have won by a larger margin had the cards fallen more kindly.   Watford’s keeper made three excellent saves.

Both managers will no doubt have words to say about penalty shouts with Charlton's Josh Edwards having a big shout when coming together with Jeremy Ngakia earlier in the second half.

A corner on the left is slung to the back post by Conor Coventry and Lloyd Jones does enough to get the ball back into the mixer where substitute Harvey Knibbs hammered home from six yards out.

Towards the end of the second half, Robert Apter picked up the ball on the right front edge and dances across just outside the 18 yard area looking for an opening.   He has a go but his curling effort from 20 yards just fizzed over the upright.

Charlton looked defensively very solid, although crosses sometimes posed a challenge.

Excitement builds as a tough season gets under way

It seems to have come up more quickly than some of us anticipated, but today Charlton face Watford at The Valley in the first of their Championship games in the new season.   CAS Trust has some fun with the turnover of Watford managers: https://www.castrust.org/2025/08/watford-in-new-manager-shock/

Many moons ago Murray mints said that the Championship was in effect a Premier League Division Two.  That is even more so today with parachute payments providing further funding for what are already big clubs.   It's going to be tough and Charlton fans will need to display a patience for which they are not noted.

If there is one word I would use to describe last year's successful side it would be 'resilience'.   My view is that the key matches in a season are often away matches midweek.   That was the case last season at Mansfield.   They are not a great side, but they are tough to beat on their own patch, not least in wintry conditions.   When we won there, I thought that we might be in with a chance of promotion.

Unlike the barmy Belgian, the board have spent sensibly to try and stay in the division.  No, they didn't enter the Izak bidding war, but they have made some realistic acquisitions with potential.   The criticism of their strategy is obvious, and has been made by the 'experts' conjured up by The New York Times, but needs must.

The new side needs to gel and there are some tricky selection decisions.   The Sparrows Lane treatment table is already occupied, with Matty Godden having undergone a 'procedure' on his knee.

As for today's opponents, Four Four Two has them finishing 15th.    We should be able to beat them and it would be a great start to the season, but a draw is more likely.

Two out of five 'experts' mark Charlton for the drop

From The Athletic:

Pigott: Things look very bleak for Sheffield Wednesday before a ball has even been kicked. Hull City were fortunate not to go down last year, and despite impressing in their first year up after promotion, Oxford United will find it harder this time around.

Evans: Norwich City, Wednesday, Oxford. It’s a very poor second-tier this season and I reckon as many as 10 teams will be nervously looking over their shoulder at various stages. West Bromwich Albion also look like a club heading for trouble.

Sutcliffe: Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Hull. The latter’s scattergun approach to player and manager recruitment is likely to come home to roost. Newly promoted Charlton have cherry-picked a lot of last season’s League One talent, but the danger with such an approach is ending up with a team that really belongs in the division below.

Buckingham: It’s sad to say, but it already looks as if Wednesday are doomed after a summer that means they’re turning up for a gunfight armed with a water pistol. I’ve also got concerns for Hull, who narrowly avoided the drop last season, but I’ll go with Oxford and Charlton to complete the three. They have decent managers in Gary Rowett and Nathan Jones, but both have shortcomings.

Weatherspoon: Wednesday’s awful off-field summer speaks volumes. Hull nearly dropped down last season and have little to crow about either. After those two, it’s one from as many as 10. Oxford signing young striker Will Lankshear on loan from Tottenham Hotspur could prove crucial in keeping them up. If they survive again, the end of Preston North End’s dreary 11-year stay in this division looms.

Additional comments:

'It feels like Charlton will struggle. The Valley, in south-east London, is a decent away day, though.'

'I’ve been impressed with Charlton’s business. A mixture of solid Championship experience — Amari’i Bell, Reece Burke, goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, Joe Rankin-Costello — plus players who have shown signs they could handle the step up to the second tier — Charlie Kelman, Rob Apter, Harvey Knibbs and Tanto Olaofe. They’ll have enough to remain in the division.'

'Charlton risk being a ‘Best of League One’ side in the wrong division, but the inadequacies of others will see them just about secure safety.'

In memory of Jorge Costa

I was saddened to hear of the premature death of Jorge Costa, one of the best defenders we have ever had, even if for just 20 games.   Young, Fish, Costa, Fortune: what a line up.

'He comes from Portugal and he ****ing hates Millwall..'   Doubtless he had never heard of them, but Charlton fans took him to their hearts.

I remember him squaring up to, and glaring down, some hapless attacker at The Valley.   Costa in tears at his last game at Old Trafford.  And coming back with Porto for the Steve Brown testimonial.

It's understood Costa, who was Porto's director of football, suffered a cardiac arrest at the club's training ground in Olival according to Portuguese media.

Bumper crowd for opening game

Attendance at The Valley for Saturday's match against Watford is looking set to exceed the 21,675 turnout for the first home game in the 2008-09 season. That total had not been bettered...until now.

A reporter who covers Watford told Richard Cawley: 'The Hornets were unpredictable last season and belied pundits tipping them to go down. This looks a decent opener for Charlton. Nathan Jones’ side come into the match off the high of winning the League One play-off final at Wembley and the home support will be massively up for it - you can imagine a similar highly-charged atmosphere to the semi-final second leg against Wycombe Wanderers. There is no doubt that the hosts will be pumped up and mega motivated.'

I hope to provide some preview material of my own over the next few days, although at the moment I am being pumped full of antibiotics to deal with an as yet undiagnosed illness.

Gasman's brace leads to victory

391 Addicks enjoyed a convincing 3-0 win over Southend United yestrtday.

Sonny Carey fired the Addicks in front in the first half before Shrimpers wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss wasted the chance to equalise as his spot-kick was saved by Thomas Kaminski.

The Addicks raced further clear at the start of the second half with substitute Gassan Ahadme scoring twice in quick succession as Charlton boss Nathan Jones enjoyed a successful return to his former club.

After a quiet start to the game, Charlton broke the deadlock in the 19th minute with Carey on target. The Addicks broke quickly after Harry Taylor had been caught in possession and soon switched the ball into the right hand side of the penalty area where Carey netted with a powerful effort which deflected in off Blues defender Ben Goodliffe.

Summer signing Slavis Spasov was  brought down in the box by Amari’i Bell and referee Robert Claussen immediately pointed to the penalty spot.   However, Scott-Morriss was unable to make the most of the opportunity as his 12 yard shot was kept out by Thomas Kaminski diving to his right hand side.

The visitors opted to make a change at the break with Ahadme replacing former Shrimpers striker Charlie Kelman in attack.   (Leaburn was sidelined with a knock in triaing).  And the forward made an instant impression scoring twice in quick succession.

Ahadme’s first goal came in the 49th minute when he headed home a superb right wing cross from Conor Coventry and just seconds later the striker was celebrating again as he clinically converted a low cross-shot from Rob Apter.

Clutching at straws?

Richard Cawley notes: 'The opening four matches of the Championship season will all be against bosses appointed over the summer. Can't imagine that has happened too often. Maybe that could be a positive factor for the south Londoners as they look to hit the ground running?

But then players may be trying to impress their new boss, something that is a regular occurrence at Watford.

With the start of the Championship season now just 10 days away, Nathan Jones at this stage will be the 4th longest serving manager in that division and he’s only been in charge at Charlton Athletic for just under 18 months now.

At least we landed Harvey Knibb in the end, what a saga that was.

Back to where we belong

Ramsgate-based fan and VOTV editor Rick Everitt looks at 'the coming storm' in the Championship and assesses Charlton's prospects compared with our last two promotions to our favourite division: https://www.votvonline.com/home/the-2025-26-blogs/31-7-at-last-it-s-back-to-where-we-once-belonged/

End of the Pier

More negative news from down the coast at Deal.   Leading armchair critic Desmond from Deal has had to call off his meeting for Kent coast malcontents at the end of Deal Pier.  Some potential participants felt they could not manage the trek up the pier and others did not like the vegetarian/vegan theme of the cafĂ© there, one unfortunate having been asked whether he needed milk in his tea.

However, all is not lost.  Des says: 'I had a word with Graham at the King's Head on the sea front and he said we could meet there if there weren't too many of us (no problem about that) and we did insult Palace, Millwall or Gillingham.

Clearing up confusion

Richard Cawley reports: 'Saw some suggestions that the Dane Murphy situation could have affected the Harvey Knibbs transfer. Don't believe that has anything to do with it whatsoever. Murphy had not actually taken on the CEO role as he had not passed the EFL Owners' and Directors' test before there was confirmation he was not coming in.'

Cawley notes that Reading's boss has told in house media that the Knibbs deal is off.

When I'm cleaning windows

The contracted window cleaner came round to my wife's flat the other day and noticed the Charlton place mat.  He said he had been at the Charlton academy and had actually lived round the corner from Sparrows Lane.

My wife put him on the phone to me.  He said his name was Paul Young and mentioned various players he had known.  He didn't claim to have played for the first team, but I have some vague idea that he may have been a substitute in 2000/01.   Anyone remember him?

Championship favourites beat Charlton

Ipswich Town are favourites to win the Championship title this season and they beat Charlton 2-1 tonight at Colchester's stadium with its capacious car park.

All the goals came in a seven-minute spell early in the second half.

Jack Clarke put the Tractor Boys in front on 51 minutes but summer signing Isaac Olaofe equalised four minutes later.

Ipswich almost instantly responded, Ali Al-Hamadi slotted through the legs of goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski from Luke Woolfenden’s ball over the top.

Charlie Kelman played the last 20 minutes.

Charlton target Reading attacker

Richard Cawley has confirmed that Charlton are bidding for 24-year old Reading star attacker Harvey Knibbs.

Knibbs, 24, has been another of the standout attackers in England’s third tier with 20 goal involvements in the 2024-25 season, 14 goals and six assists. He successfully converted all four of his penalties.

Knibbs outperformed his xG (11.80) and created 44 chances, the same amount as Tyreece Campbell.

The former Aston Villa youngster has registered 16 goals in all competitions in each of the last two seasons.

Cawley has an interesting interview with former Addick Jake Forster-Caskey on his Substack page.  Injuries stopped him doing his best for us.

The end of the pier show

Desmond from Deal has confirmed that he will be organizing a meeting at the end of Deal Pier for Charlton fans who have been deprived of their opportunity to moan about the owners and the manager this summer.

Lisbie dynasty flourishes

Winger Kalon Lisbie has become the second member of the Lisbie footballing empire to sign up for Colchester United joining his older brother Kyreece who signed for the U's in February 2024 and has established his place there following an impressive loan spell with Braintree Town.

Kyrell, Kyreece's twin, is on a three year contract at Peterborough United.

It is believed that other Lisbies are available, just look out for the letter 'K'.

Charlton close on Kelman deal

Richard Cawley, now driving to Cambridge, has reported that Charlton are closing on a deal to sign QPR striker and US international Charlie Kelman.

Jones refuses to comment on Everton raid

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has refused to “speculate” on the future of defensive prospect Reuben Gokah, 16, amid claims he is set to sign for Everton.

But the Welshman has made it clear to Richard Cawley that he is totally devoted to giving the club’s youngsters the opportunity to crack first-team football in SE7.

Gokah is seen as a top talent but might have better chances to progress at The Valley.

Cawley's latest Substack features interesting revelations by Peter Varney.

Thursday, 24 July 2025

What future for the Gasman?

Gassan Adahme has three years to run on his contract and was our most expensive signing last season, but if I have interpreted remarks by Nathan Jones to Richard Cawley correctly, his future is not at Charlton.  Indeed, the word 'passenger' is used indirectly in the interview.   He did not go to Slovenia and has not featured in any of the pre-season friendlies.

The challenge is to get someone interested in a player who has had just nine minutes of football this year.  A prospective loan deal with Cambridge United fell through after the Gasman was not interested. Plymouth Argyle were reported to be interested earlier in the summer.

Weald yield

Some Charlton players made their own way to the suburban home of Wealdstone yesterday evening, but the tireless Richard Cawley and Louis Mendez were there already.

On 25 minutes Charlton went 1-0- up - Isaac Olaofe from the penalty spot after Josh Edwards was fouled by the goalkeeper. The Addicks were on the front foot for plenty of the opening exchanges.

The Stones defence love giving away a penalty. This time a foul on Dan Kanu, who had raced on to Alex Mitchell's excellent through ball. Kanu stepped up to convert.

Sonny Carey headed in from close range after a fierce shot by Nathan Asiimwe is only parried up into the air. Only one change made by the Addicks at the start of the second half - Josh Edwards replaced by Ibrahim Fullah.

Trialist today was Dexter Lembikisa - a right wing-back who is currently with Wolves.  The Addicks could hit double figures for transfer signings this window.

Talent gap will see Charlton relegated

In their season preview Four Four Two magazine forecast that Charlton will be relegated from the Championship in 23rd place.   Admittedly they did forecast we would dice with relegation in the year Chris Powell won the League One championship.

The magazine lists some of the players we have added, 'but [Charlton] still have more work to do to improve on their League One squad.  Will a siege mentality be enough to overcome the talent gap?'

However, in the fan file, Ramsgate-based fan Rick Everitt predicts a 16th place finish and 'we'll be more than happy with that.'

Everitt states 'Charlton are back at the level that fans expect and that the club's history, stadium and size of support merit.  The Addicks hadn't spent so long in the third tier since the1920s.'

'Fans think our ownership is well-intentioned but obscure .... Given that their immediate predecessor liked to play his guitar on the pitch, we're just relieved.'

'Our most underrated player is Kayne Ramsay, a right back we picked up from Harrogate Town in February 2024.   His composure in possession has stood out.'

'Fans think our gaffer has proven himself by turning things around after a difficult spell.  Nathan Jones is a very emotional and animated presence on the touchline, and he was won the fans' trust.'

Moaners' spokesman Desmond from Deal was not convinced by the warm words from around the coast: 'Four Four Two have taken a long, cold hard look at the facts.  Six weeks and the wheels will be off and then where will the so-called Welsh Wizard be?   He is no Messiah.'

Win in training camp friendly

Charlton beat HNK Goria 2-0 in today’s friendly in Slovenia, reports Louis Mendez.

In the first half Charlton's best chance just before the break as Olaofe headed just wide from Edwards' cross. Jones went in the book for a strong challenge midway through the half. First minutes for Kaminski who made a routine save from a free header.

Miles Leaburn started the second-half - good to see him back. Rob Apter in as well, as is Joe Rankin-Costello. Amari'i Bell captained the side for the second-half.

Karoy Anderson scored directly from a corner. Gorcia goalkeeper dropeds it over the line. 1-0 to the Addicks in the 83rd minute.

2-0! Great footwork from Fullah and he fires across goal and it goes in.

Owners splash the cash on Apter

Richard Cawley reports on X: ‘Signing number seven for Charlton is their biggest spend of the transfer window - Rob Apter from Blackpool. Most exciting addition of the summer so far? The 22-year-old Scouser, capped by Scotland at U21 level, has penned a deal until the summer of 2029.’

Cawley states: ‘Transfer fees are very tricky to pin down precisely but Apter’s fee is likely to be the biggest paid by the Addicks since they reportedly parted with £2million to bring in centre-back Naby Sarr from Sporting Lisbon in July 2015. One website has claimed that the transfer of the Tangerines’ prize asset exceeds that sum.

It’s definitely the most expensive outlay by owners Global Football Partners since they took control of the club in July 2023. Before that Gassan Ahadme is believed - this isn’t something I’d stand up and testify in court about (although why I would be in the dock in the first place would be puzzling) - to have cost around £750,000 from Ipswich Town last summer.’

Tom Mayne from a Blackpool podcast says: ‘Exciting is definitely a word to use. He is not the finished article but Nathan Jones and Steve Bruce know that. He played every single game last season, bar one.

He is fearless and has a lot of growing to do, which I think he knows himself. What I love the most is his tenacity, if he gets tackled or loses the ball then he’ll continue to try and do something for the team to create something out of nothing.’

Much more on Richard Cawley’s Substack page.

Leading moaners have convened a meeting at the end of Deal Pier as they search for a summer narrative.

Addicks interest in Apter confirmed

Blackpool boss Steve Bruce - on Charlton interest in Rob Apter - told a local journo: "We’ve had conversations with Charlton, but where it’s at, I really don’t know - that’s for others to talk about.”

“We don’t want to sell Rob, but we all know in football that everyone has their price. Whether there’s any more developments, I’m not too sure.”

“He’s a dying breed. He’s one of those that can go past people and make something happen. None of us want him to go, but it’s football. It’s obviously a difficult situation, for Rob he could get to the Championship."

A price of £2.5m has been rumoured.

Richard Cawley reports that Nathan Jones confirms that Charlton will loan out one of their two young strikers - Micah Mbick or Dan Kanu.

Jones hopes to make moe quality signings

Boss Nathan Jones on whether there is expected to be more arrivals in the next few weeks, reports Richard Cawley: "Definitely. In the next few days, we'd like to. Recruitment is ongoing - we're not finished yet."

"We need more quality, in terms of how we play and what we do. We need to add that quality, that's what we've done. We've got a good base now to work from with the people we've brought in.”

"Thomas (Kaminski) is a wonderful signing, Burke (Reece Burke) is going to be fantastic for us and Amari'i is a wonderful, wonderful signing. So we've got that strength and we've added a bit more quality in terms of Sonny (Carey) and Joe (Rankin-Costello). But we still want that real top-end quality and that is what we are striving to bring in."

Jones played it cool when asked by this website about reported interest in Blackpool winger Rob Apter.  The exciting 22-year-old right-winger is being linked with a move to the Championship newcomers.

Addicks make sixth summer signing

Joe Rankin-Costello makes it six signings this summer for the Championship new boys - and this time it's not from Luton..  Charlton have offered a four-year contract to the Blackburn player, who joins for an undisclosed fee.

Richard Cawley notes: ‘Lot of talk about his ability to play all over the place but interestingly Nathan Jones talks in his signing quotes talks about the 25-year-old as "a really versatile and technically excellent midfield player.” NJ: "We're really delighted to get Joe on board. He's a player I've watched for a number of years."’

Cawley adds: ‘He fought his way back into favour at Blackburn Rovers.  He is a goal scoring threat – especially against Millwall.  He is a handyman in a number of different positions.  A move down south can get his career motoring.’

Career details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Rankin-Costello

The speed, number and quality of signings is depriving pessimists of one of their favourite summer narratives.

Deal or no Deal?

We spent an enjoyable few days in Deal taking advantage of the sea air and some of the excellent food on offer.  However, from a footballing point of view, it was a desert.

There was initial excitement when our HST train stopped at Thanet Parkway, a station backed by Councillor Rick Everitt against 'know nothing' opposition.  It was even suggested that the estate containing the Rickhaus could be seen across the fields.

However, when we detrained at Ramsgate there was no sign of a civic welcome, not even a Millwall fan telling us we were not welcome.

Indeed, over the few days I saw hardly any evidence of football allegiance, although there was much background chat about golf and, like others, we were preoccupied with Wimbledon.   I did not see any shirts, badges or other tokens of support for Chelsea, Millwall, Palace, Gillingham or even Deal Town.  The one exception was a gentleman bursting out of his Arsenal shirt.

I did see one or two elderly gentlemen who fitted the profile of Desmond from Deal, but I could hardly approach them and ask, 'Are you Desmond from Deal, the scourge of Charlton managers?'  I might have ended up thrown off Deal Pier before I sampled the vegetarian cuisine on sale at the end (and very good it was).

Indeed, the main preoccupation in Deal seems to be walking the dog(s) who can have ice cream suitable for them served at the start of the pier or enjoy a veggie treat for dogs at the end.

The Times did have a good story about Millwall.   Apparently, the Rust Bucket is being refurbished.  The New Den was opened with a game against Sporting Lisbon, even bigger in the early 1990s than now.

The writer said that a typical Millwall supporter, overweight and covered in tattoos sat down in front of him with his son.   Impressed by their kit, he lad asked who the opposition were.  'Wankers,' replied his dad, 'Wankers.'

I did take a few days off electronically, but it is good news that Miles Leaburn has signed a new contract..  There is still potential to be realised.

Kent search for leading moaners

Decades ago papers like the long departed Daily Sketch used to send someone to seaside resorts in the summer to distribute a guinea to anyone who could answer a simple question in that day's paper.  No doubt many innocent holidaymakers were bothered by someone saying 'You are Loopy Lou, the answer to today's question is Elvis Presley and I claim my prize.'

I will be on the Kent coast later this week, anywhere between Ramsgate and Dungeness (I am hoping for a municipal welcome in Ramsgate from the leader of Thanet Council, Councillor Rick Everitt).  My question is, 'who was the American goalkeeper who played for Charlton>'

One of my main objectives is to work out why so many of the leading moaners and pessimists at Charlton are congregated on the coast.   Whilst I am unlikely to identify Desmond from Deal or Derek from Dymchurch, it would be interesting to hear why they are so negative.   I will probably end up with a crowing Nigel from New Romney.

Unhappy Hatter gives thumbs up to keeper

I met the local Hatter this morning.   He confirmed that Thomas Kaminski is a very good keeper and that he is a real loss for Luton.   He was certainly their best player last season.  If it hadn't been for his saves, Luton would have been relegated by mid-season.  He is a great shot stopper.   The Hatter thought that he did not have any obvious weaknesses.

Richard Cawley reports on another link with Luton:  'More big Championship experience added to the Charlton squad as they hand a two-year deal to Amari'i Bell.  This signing reunites the Jamaican international with Nathan Jones, who was a key factor in him signing for Luton Town. Bell released by the Hatters at the end of last season.'

Third signing saddens northern Hatters

Richard Cawley reports ‘Charlton have signed Stockport County striker Isaac Olaofe on a three-year contract with club option of another 12 months. No fee disclosed but believed to be in the region of £1.5million. This is the third signing of the summer transfer window.’

Stockport County chief executive Simon Wilson on Isaac Olaofe’s departure: “It is with both a heavy but also proud heart that we say goodbye to Tanto, a player who has added so much to our club in the two-and-a-half years he has been here. I remember in his first interview, Liam asked ‘how would you describe yourself?’, to which Tanto replied ‘I like to be a nuisance for defenders’! He has been that for sure, but so much more too.”

Cawley adds: ‘There will be a piece going up on my Substack today about Olaofe but I’m currently somewhere that doesn’t have the signal to upload it,’   Hopefully this will offset some of the inevitable moans before they gather momentum.

Cawley also reports that the Addicks are interested in a loan move for striker Daniel Kanu. ‘The young forward needs extended game time. Probably going to be a struggle to get that with the Addicks this season’ is Cawley’s assessment.

Unconfirmed reports are stating that Gassan Ahadme is close to signing for Plymouth Argyle.   The streets around SE7 have remained calm and there have been no reports of fans rending their shirts.

Keeper signing imminent

Richard Cawley reports that Charlton are expected to confirm the signing of Luton Town goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.  A fee of around £1m has been reported.

Cawley comments: 'Very experienced. One of the Hatters' star men during their one-season stay in the Premier League.'

It is anticipated that the Belgian will be No.1 keeper with either Will Mannion or Ashley Maynard-Brewer as back up.   One of them will presumably be loaned or sold.

After the usual complaints about lack of signings, some fans are criticising this signing.  Yes, Mannion did do a good job for us last year, but we are no longer in League One.  Kaminsji has Premier League and Championship experience.  He wasn't the weak link that saw Luton relegated.

I expect to meeting our local mad Hatter later in the week, so will seek his opinion.

Charlton bid for Aneke 2.0

Richard Cawley reports that Charlton Athletic are aiming to complete a deal for Stockport County striker Isaac Olaofe.   The 25-year-old scored 12 goals in 51 matches last season.

Lewisham-born Olaofe started his career on the books of Millwall and they are set to profit from any deal.

Charlton have been looking for a Chuks Aneke replacement without the injuries who can complement Matt Godden up front.

Yann gives the lowdown on Duchatelet

Richard Cawley has conducted a very informative interview with former Valley favouriteYann Kermogant on his Subtack page.

You should subscribe to read it, but here is what the Breton had to say about the barmy Belgian:

“I would say within a few weeks I could see he didn’t have a clue about football. He didn’t understand it - and especially not English football.

“After a few meetings - I think Chris Solly was there for one - and he (Duchatelet) was talking about swapping players from a different league, he had other clubs. He said: ‘I’ve got another right-back at another club and I can bring him here - it will be fine, he is a good player’. I was thinking: ‘Your guy is not even playing in this league and you think he will come to the Championship and help us? I don’t think you understand the toughness and competitiveness of it’.

“I couldn’t stay under this guy (Duchatelet). He didn’t want me to be there."

“I had been promised a new deal by the manager at the time. I think there was maybe a question about giving me three years and he (Duchatelet) didn’t want to give me the money I was asking for and felt I deserved."

The end of the pier show

Richard Cawley reports: 'Charlton will play at Southend United on August 2 (3pm). Final tune-up before their Championship season starts. No home friendly this time around - priority is ensuring The Valley pitch is in tip-top condition for the new campaign.'

Posh player rumours denied

Richard Cawley reports on X: 'No contact from Charlton for Peterborough United's Malik Mothersille. Had been a suggestion recently that QPR are prepared to pay £1m for the 21-year-old, who is due to be out of contract next summer.'

Posh are set to re-introduce their policy of transfer listing players entering the last year of their contract if they refuse to sign a new deal. Mothersille has so far resisted all Posh efforts to get him to sign a fresh contract.

Mind the gap

CAS Trust recommends an article on how the examples of Portsmouth and Oxford United suggest how Charlton might survive in the Championship: https://www.castrust.org/2025/06/can-charlton-bridge-the-gap-next-season/

It is one of  the most competitive leagues in the world but we shouldn't be too daunted.

A chip off the old block

Danny Mills was one of my favourite Charlton players, albeit we had to sell him to balance the books.  Curbs got him from Norwich and I happened to be behind the scenes on his first day at The Valley so I told him he was a great signing for the club.

It is therefore pleasing to see the progress of his son, George, losing his hair like his dad.  He did well in the Diamond League athletics in Stockholm the other night and yesterday he achieved a personal best in Paris, coming 3rd in the 1500m after leading much of the way.

His brother plays for Oxford United.

Move away from Valley not ruled out

Charlton board member Jim Rodwell confirmed that Roland Duchatelet still owns The Valley and training ground - asked the question by talkSPORT's Simon Jordan: "We make no secret our ownership would like to buy the stadium or enter into a longer lease. We have still got a considerable amount of time left. I know that fans like certainty and so do businessmen."

Some accounts suggest that there are only a few years left before we come up against the EFL ten year rule on leased grounds.   The barmy Belgian (not so barmy when it comes to money) is still asking for a huge sum for The Valley and Sparrows Lane.

Asked about if there is a possibility of moving: "It's always a possibility. I think the desire would be to stay at The Valley. We want certainty of tenure." He refused to answer whether cost of the lease has gone up after promotion to the Championship.

He commented in relation to transfers: “The silly season is upon us. People go on holiday and it will all get very real in the next week or two."

I have just received the accounts for property investment company Charlton Athletic Holdings Ltd.  The ultimate owner is one R Duchatelet, resident in Belgium.    The Valley and the training ground are valued at £56m.

Rick Everitt reports that Baton 2010 company accounts show Charlton paid Duchatelet £621,000 in rent in 2023/24. Valley lease, which is most of that, is due to expire in January 2035.

Huddersfield bid for Charlton target

Richard Cawley reports on Twitter: Huddersfield Town have put in a bid for Leyton Orient's Ethan Galbraith. Not sure if it is the £2.5m that has been mooted, but sounds like it's in that ballpark. No indications at the moment whether EG is still one that Charlton are sweet on. Don't think wages likely to be a problem, it's just how high he is up their wanted list.

The Pompey route to staying up

Football finance guru Kieran Maguire praises Portsmouth's 'sustainable' approach to the Championship.  Some teams like Bristol City have spent big and got nowhere in what Maguire calls 'the most bonkers division' in world football: https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/portsmouth-fc/portsmouth-fc-finances-championship-kieran-maguire-expert

We have a good record of taking six points off them.

Massives see hope of owner changing

Regarded by their fans as a 'massive' club, Sheffield Wednesday have been in the doldrums recently.  EFL sanctions have prompted speculation about a fire sale of players from which Charlton could benefit.  But now a serious American ownership bid has emerged whilst their unpopular owner faces financial pressures of hos own: https://footballeconomyv2.blogspot.com/2025/06/hope-of-effective-new-ownership-at.html

Galbraith bid shows ambition

We may have had our bid for Leyton Orient's Ethan Galbraith turned down, but it does show that the current ownership is willing to spend some money to keep us in the Championship.  It is possible that we could increase our bid for the Northern Ireland international: https://www.newsletter.co.uk/sport/football/northern-ireland/charlton-athletic-see-ps13million-bid-rejected-for-northern-ireland-star-who-is-premier-league-player-in-the-making-5177533

Reading supporters think that attacking midfielder Harvey Knibbs may be on his way to us, but I have no independent confirmation.

In any event all the signals suggest that the approach to promotion is different from the days of the barmy Belgian.

Historic club in danger of forced move

An appeal by the Scottish Football Supporters Association for an historic club:

Next Friday, the SPFL will release the fixtures for next season.    At present, Hamilton Academical will feature in that list, but there is a serious chance that they may not be able to fulfil those fixtures.  Why? Well, it’s a mess to be honest, but this is what we understand the current situation is, with the caveat that this is changing on a daily, if not hourly basis.

As we have reported over the last few weeks, the Accies Supporters’ Association has come together to do everything it can to save their club.  The SFSA has seen at first hand the passion and emotional involvement of the Accies’ supporters.  It’s both uplifting and harrowing: these fans really do fear, and with justification, for the future of the club that many have watched for generations.

Currently, there are three parties involved.  They are: the directors/owners of the club; the man who owns the stadium; and the fans.  It is no secret to say there is a lack of trust between all three.

The SPFL will not allow a club to take part in its competitions unless it has a ground to play in, with a lease for at least a season.  Essentially, there are a few days for the directors/owners of the Accies to sign a deal which is acceptable to the football authorities. If that doesn’t happen then it seems likely that the club will struggle to continue to exist, unless it can find another ground.

There is, we understand, a possible deal for the Accies to remain at New Douglas Park. This has (again we understand) been verbally agreed between the Supporters’ Association and the stadium owner.  The problem is that the club directors/owners will not agree to this under any circumstances. In our view, without knowing all the details, this is a tragedy.  If some way could be found to square this circle, the Accies could stay in Hamilton.

Surely, that’s what everyone would want? Radio Scotland reported that the owners say that is their intention to return to Hamilton. If they can demonstrate a viable plan to do this, the supporters would, we suspect, be much more comfortable with what is happening just now. But at present, it looks like it’s Broadwood [Cumbernnauld, 1 hour 14 minutes by train] or bust.  Let’s hope it’s not the latter. No fan will want one of Scotland’s famous old clubs to be consigned to history.

It’s incumbent fans of all clubs to support their counterparts at Accies.  Please do so here (this will take you less than 30 seconds).

Kermorgant agreed to take pay cut to come to Charlton

Richard Cawley's new Substack platform is allowing him to do more expansive and informative interviews than when he was at SLP.   His latest one is with former Charlton chief executive Peter Varney.

Richard now derives his livelihood from the platform, but I am going to give a short teaser from the interview about Yann Kermorgant: 'I don’t want to quote the figures of what he was on at Leicester, but we only had half of that money left in the budget. We came up with a way that Yann got the money later, if we got up. All that is quite stressful because he wants a figure and you can’t get a figure from the powers that be. So you have to be innovative in the way that you’re doing it.'

Congratulations to the Chicago Addick on 21 years of blogging.   Addick's Diary started in September 1997, so it has been going for nearly 28 years.   It was then much more personal, as it really started as series of electronic notes for my own benefit.

The first entry read: 'On September 26th I gave up the line management job I have held for the last seven years. At 12 noon I handed over the personnel files to the fervent Baggie who was succeeding me. In the afternoon we held a meeting which he chaired for the first time, ending with his wishing us all 'Good football matches over the weekend.' 'How does it feel?' asked one of my young Australian colleagues, 'Are you going to go home and open the champagne?' 'No', I said, 'I'll just have a workout and open the champagne if we win tomorrow.'

The heyday of blogging was in the Premier League days, Richard Murray even invited us in for a briefing.  We have now lost two of our best bloggers who have gone to join Sam Bartram.

I will be slowing down somewhat as Richard Cawley is now really the 'go to' source of news, but I will post stories from time to time that he has not covered.

Famewo linked with Charlton

Sheffield sources are linking Charlton with a bid for highly rated defender Akin Famewo who has already had two successful loan spells at The Valley and was with Nathan Jones at Luton.  The Massives are currently having difficulty paying player wages: https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-wednesday/charlton-athletic-sheffield-wednesday-akin-famewo-5162900

We say farewell to Thierry Small who has been snapped up by Preston North End.   Most people would accept a better offer, although I did turn down a substantially better one towards the end of my career because I was happy where I was.

Jones to sign extended contract

Richard Cawley reports that Nathan Jones is expected to sign a new deal.  It would increase the compensation to be paid by any club that tried to poach him, believed to be just £1m at present.

The club has now officially confirmed that he has signed the contract/

Unbelievable. Jeff

Some fans still seem to be concerned about Nathan Jones going to Cardiff despite the authoritative Richard Cawley knocking the story on its head.

Rational argument often doesn't do well against clickbait and the social media echo chamber, but let's try.

Nathan Jones has just got Charlton promoted, Cardiff have just been relegated.   He has the backing of the board, the team, and most fans apart from a few perennial malcontents.

Vincent Tan at Cardiff is a hopeless owner.   Despite pouring money into the club and continually changing manager, they have failed on the pitch.

He even tried to change the club's kit from their traditional kit to a red-based kit that was supposed to appeal to Asian fans, most of whom have no idea where Wales is, let alone Cardiff.

He only backed down when his mum told him he was a very naughty boy.

Jones wants to wipe out the memory of Southampton and Charlton gives him the chance to do that.

I have now booked a few days on the Kent coast which is a particular haunt of Charlton pessimists such as Desmond from Deal and Derek from Dymchurch.   I will wear my Charlton badge and will be happy to buy a pint for any fan, even the moaners.

Escape the clickbait

Richard Cawley has now set up a site on Substack.   He writes: 'It’s exciting times for Charlton Athletic after promotion to the Championship and I’m aiming to bring my own brand of coverage on this platform. My previous job at the South London Press led to me covering the Addicks for nearly two decades. Now it is time for the next chapter. I strongly believe this platform will allow me to enhance and freshen up my approach. Plus I want input from subscribers about what they want me to cover - as well as all the ideas I have for features and other aspects of the site.'

Highly recommended.  https://southlondonsportcharlton.substack.com/

Calm down!

Sometimes I despair of Charlton fans who are so susceptible to a mood of hysterical pessimism.   A journalist in South Wales starts a clickbait story that Nathan Jones is going to Cardiff and immediately a large segment of the Addickted believe it.

We all know that many South Walians are chancers, e.g., Rob Brydon pretending to be his own agent.

Thankfully Richard Cawley has stated: 'Indications I've had is that there is no chance of Nathan Jones going to Cardiff. Not to say they wouldn't have loved the Charlton boss to try and bounce them straight back out of League One.'

Nathan Jones may be mercurial, but he is not an idiot.

Cawley has indicated that he may be back online sooner rather than later.

Another Lisbie joins EFL side

Kyrell Lisbie has joined Peterborough on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee.   The 21-year old scored 16 goals for Braintree Town in their survival fight in the season just ended.   Lisbie joined the Iron last summer from Cray Valley Paper Mills whom he helped to the Isthmian South East title.

As well as being Player of the Season at Braintree, Lisbie was also awarded Sportsbeat Young Player of the Year at the Non-League Paper's awards ceremony.

Lisbie's twin brother Kyreece already plays at Colchester United.   'K' is clearly popular with dad Kevin Lisbie.

I shall watch his progress with interest.

Time to go Feeshing?

I must say that I had to laugh at the account published in The Times this morning of Manchester United's post-season tour to Malaysia and Hong Kong.  It may have raised £8m towards a £10m gap in their finances, but it seems to have seriously pissed off their already demoralised players who had to resort to the consolations offered by a few drinks (such as six bottles of champagne from a slot machine): https://www.thetimes.com/sport/football/article/inside-manchester-uniteds-chaotic-post-season-asian-tour-

However, it does raise the question of how Charlton should boost its global presence now we are in what is de facto the Premier League Division 2, the biggest competition outside the top flight anywhere in the world.

When we were in the Premier League, there was some interest in Charlton in unlikely places.  I have never quite got over switched on my television in Kunming in south-west China to see a rather good analysis of how Curbs and Keith Peacock worked together.

There was some interest in the club in an Asian tour but when I had word with Curbs it was clear that his grasp of geopolitics did not match his football skills - and indeed why should they be.

Our aims now need to be more modest and I would suggest that we should make use of the large numbers of expat Charlton fans in the 'Anglosphere': the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  Their friends probably already support Premier League clubs, but perhaps they could be persuaded to adopt Charlton as their Championship club?

I also think we ought to reinvigorate our links with South Africa.   In the late 1940s and early 1950s this was an important source of recruitment for us.  In the Premier League days we benefitted from players such as Sean Bartlett and Feesh.

I have never been to South Africa and I don't know anything about the current state of South African football, although I suspect it has gone downhill over the last twenty years, but there may be undiscovered talent there.

Farewell Chuks

Chuks Aneke has been let go by the club.  It was the right decision by the club for the injury prone player.  I would like to thank him for the crucial goals and the way in which he disrupted opposition defences and I am pleased that he got on the pitch at Wembley.

I hope that he is able to continue playing football, but in the meantime he has built a £2m property business, acquiring his first buy to let in 2013: https://www.3sixtypg.co.uk/about-us/

Reports are circulating that Thierry Small has been offered a new contract.  I hope that he takes it.

Blackpool defender speculation

Without the guidance of Richard Cawley available, it is difficult to know what filters to apply to transfer speculation.   Clubs X and Y may be genuinely interested in a player, but then their agent throws some more clubs in the mix.

We are supposedly front runners for this Blackpool defender who is a free agent as a replacement for Thierry Small: https://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/sport/football/blackpool-fc/blackpool-fc-transfer-news-charlton-reading-doncaster-rovers-jordan-gabriel

He did spend some time at Forest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Lawrence-Gabriel

Looks like quite a long shot to me.

Danish delight

Former Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard has posted the following message: 'Charlton Athletic have done it. Promotion to the Championship. Wembley conquered.

This is what belief looks like. A squad that fought with everything they had, backed by fans who never lost faith. This is what makes football beautiful and what makes this club so special.

Charlton is more than a club. It’s a symbol of community, history, and ambition. Tonight’s win honors that legacy while setting the tone for a bold future. Congratulations to every Addick. This one’s for you. The Championship awaits.'

Sandgaard may have been naive in understanding the scale of investment necessary to get us out of League One, but he was a decent man who rescued us from the clutches of ESI.  Raffling off the Range Rover was an inspired gesture.

South London Press closes

South London Press has closed abruptly after 160 years.   The website has been taken down so links here may no longer work: https://www.holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2025/news/independent-newspaper-closes-after-160-years-with-loss-of-six-jobs/

Sports editor Richard Cawley has lost his job, presumably Louis Mendez has as well.

Much of the content of this site consisted of links to authoritative stories by the duo.

Jones tells of sleepless nights

From today's Times:

Tightly fought contests are often decided by individual moments of brilliance, and this game demanded exactly that after a cagey opening 30 minutes. The centre half, Macaulay Gillesphey, delivered Charlton Athletic’s season-defining moment when he broke the deadlock with an excellently whipped free kick over the Leyton Orient wall to send his side back to the Sky Bet Championship.

Charlton’s quest to return to the second tier after five years in League One has, for the most part, felt like a slog. Before Nathan Jones’s arrival as manager in February 2024, relegation to League Two looked more likely than promotion.

So for Jones, this result is one of huge personal significance. Despite being a key figure in much of Luton Town’s rise from League Two to the Premier League, his departures to first Stoke City and then Southampton in his two spells meant that, before now, he had not tasted promotion since taking Luton up from the fourth tier in 2019.

“Today was just a culmination of probably 16 months’ work, a lot of belief, a lot of sacrifice,” Jones said. “You can’t quantify the amount of work that’s gone into it because of every single sleepless night, every single phone call, every single time I’ve slept at the training ground, every single time my family’s had to sacrifice not seeing me.”

Promotion to the Championship proved to be a step too far, for now, for Richie Wellens and Leyton Orient, having led the east London side from the bottom half of League Two to the League One play-off final in three years.

This campaign has been unforgettable, having gone toe-to-toe with Manchester City at Brisbane Road in the FA Cup and ended the regular season with a six-game winning streak to secure their place in the top six. However, the campaign was not to receive the fairytale ending many thought it deserved.

“It’s disappointing but we have to recognise where we’ve come [from],” Wellens, the Orient manager said.

The contest was a scrappy affair at the start, with shots a rarity in the opening stages. Charlton looked the better of the sides early on but had very little to show for it in terms of clear-cut chances.

It was the midfield battle that dictated the flow of the game. Being first to the frequent loose balls in the midfield was crucial to taking a foothold in the game, and Jones’s side started to do just that. Each challenge and clearance was full-blooded, with every defensive header won with conviction.

The well-placed free kick from Gillesphey was the first shot on target of the game. The free kick was won by Tyreece Campbell, the pacey Charlton winger, who was often stopped in his tracks by a much more physical Orient defender. This time, the foul was drawn in a dangerous position.

Gillesphey whipped his effort over the wall and it dipped with pace, bending out towards the corner. It was hardly out of reach for the goalkeeper, Josh Keeley, but the ball was struck with such power that he was unable to keep it out of the net, despite diving at full stretch.

That opened up the game heading into the second half, as Orient looked to stretch their opponents using their wide players, with Ethan Galbraith bombing on down the right throughout.

Wellens’s side tried alternative methods to equalise. Two of those came from Jack Currie and Charlie Kelman, whose deflected strikes came close.

Currie’s shot was directed wide of the far post by the desperately outstretched boot of Kayne Ramsay. Then shortly after, the studs of Lloyd Jones sent Kelman’s attempt bouncing wildly towards goal and off the top of the crossbar.

A lengthy break in play because of a fault in the communication between the referee and VAR was criticised by Wellens post-match, as he felt it broke up their momentum late in the match.

They attacked with increasing fluidity but ultimately could not find the final ball necessary to level up the scoreline. They will spend next season in League One, while Charlton get to experience a higher level.

Charlton Athletic (4-2-3-1): W Mannion 6 — K Ramsay 7, M Gillesphey 8, L Jones 7, J Edwards 6 — G Docherty 6, C Coventry 6 — T Small 6 (T Watson 68min, 6), A Gilbert 6 (K Anderson 68, 6), T Campbell 7 (M Mbick 81) — M Godden 7 (C Aneke 81). Booked Jones.

Resilient Charlton back in the Championship

Ramsay was almost caught out early doors, but recovered.   Lloyd Jones was fortunate not to get a yellow and Orient had a free kick.

Orient won a corner.  Mannion secured the ball comfortably and released it well.   Docherty thought he had won a Charlton corner, but the referee gave a goal kick.

After quarter of an hour there had been few incidents of note. The referee was reluctant to give free kicks.

Ramsay blocked an Orient counter attack well.

Charlton needed to improve in the final third to get a shot away.    Orient looked better in the forward areas in terms of positioning and ball control, but neither keeper had much to do.

Charlton won a free kick in a promising position after Campbell had drawn it on 29 minutes.     It was taken by Gillesphey and the much criticised player scored.

An Orient corner was poor and ended in a Charlton goal kick.

Orient tried to finish the half strongly with a spell of possession.   Charlton tried to take the sting out of the game with their own spell of possession.

Two minutes added on.

HT: 1-0

Gilbert took a Charlton free kick, but then the Addicks conceded a free kick.   Matty Godden won a free kick.

Campbell was starting to look more dangerous.

An Orient ball was just wide through a deflection.    The corner was not successful.

Two massive chances for Orient!  Currie was the first to unleash but he sees his attempt deflect out by mere inches to go out for a corner.

What do the O's do with it? They see it go just outside the box for Jordan Brown to pounce on.  He whacks it but it just lifts high. Just.

Charlie Kelman connects with his right-foot in the box to draw breath from the Addicks fans. But as good as his strike is, it takes a small knock from a Charlton defender to see it ricochet off the bar on 62 minutes.

Charlton's Alex Gilbert wiped out Jamie Donley inside of the D and gives Leyton Orient a free- kick.  The wall stood.

A disappointing Small came off along with Gilbert.   Watson and Anderson came on.  (68 minutes)

Charlton won a corner after Keeley deflected a Coventry shot.   Clare headed it away.   Subsequent play ended in a goal kick.   Ramsay required treatment for cramp.   Orient withdrew Clare in favour of James. Brown was replaced by Ball.

Ramsay was still struggling.   Charlton were having to call on all their defensive skills.   Godden waved his arms to the Addickted in encouragement.    Godden went off along with Campbell and Mbick and Aneke came on.  (81 minutes)

Orient made three more changes, Beccles was among those to go off.

The referee went down the tunnel, apparently because of technical issues with communication (the headsets).   Attendance was announced at 76,193.

11 minutes of added time were announced.    Keeley saved from Aneke.    Lloyd Jones got the first booking of the match for interfering with a free kick.

Docherty blocked a free kick with his face.   Mannion collected a free kick well, he was bold and brave.  Mannion claimed an incoming header.

Charlton won, they are back in the Championship, now the hard work begins.

Reports will appear here and on Addicks Championship Diary for a few weeks before we revert to the Championship site.

Jones bares his soul

Nathan Jones talks in depth about his upbringing in the Welsh valleys, his temperament, his beliefs and his views about current society: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/may/24/nathan-jones-charlton-league-one-playoff-final-leyton-orient-football

It would be difficult to find someone more different from Alan Curbishley.  It is perhaps difficult to remember after all these few years quite a few people had doubts about Curbs as manager (which is why he started as joint manager).

Leyton Orient were forecast by Four Four Two to finish 17th this season, but they have ended it as an in form team.   I think we need to win in 90 minutes.   I wouldn't like the game to go to penalties, our first Wembley final notwithstanding.

Hopes of a brighter future

Ramsgate-based fan Rick Everitt has had many roles in relation to Charlton including sports editor of he late lamented Mercury, club employee and editor of the Voice of the Valley fanzine.

The Rickster has never been slow to criticise trenchantly when things have gone wrong, but now he sees new hope at the club after many dark years: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletics-resurgence-under-nathan-jones-brings-tantalising-hope-of-a-far-brighter-future/

He makes the point that this is not an exceptional side and hence their achievement in getting to Wembley is even the greater.

Alan Curbishley says that Charlton are 'too big' for League One: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c861g02p275o

My new wife managed to buy a Charlton place mat for me yesterday in Leamington after sorting through Manchester City and Crystal Palace merchandise.   I take it as a good omen.

Jones helped Gillesphey improve

Macaulay Gillesphey was much criticised in the earlier part of the season and he was a leading candidate for scapegoat player of the year.   Some of the criticism was justified, as there were too many unforced errors.

But he thinks that his game has improved under the 'new gaffer' and now he faces the biggest game of his career: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletic-defender-macaulay-gillesphey-ready-for-biggest-game-of-his-career/

Travel issues on Sunday

Trains from South-East London face disruption on Sunday (mind you these days most Addicks live further afield, especially those who have retired): https://greenwichwire.co.uk/2025/05/21/charlton-athletic-play-off-final-travel-news/

The view from the other side

A Leyton Orient expert reckons that Sunday's ties could go to penalties and the O's have the sort of goalkeeper who would relish them: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/leyton-orient-expert-on-charltons-league-one-play-off-final-opponents-resolve-and-teamwork-key-to-os-success/

He rates Sean Clare more highly than Charlton fans did and says that Darren Pratley has been a leader at the club.

Addickted come from far and near

The Chicago Addick has already publicised this map showing how far the Addickted are travelling to get to Sunday's game, but it deserves wider publicity: https://cafc-many-miles-have-i-travelled.netlify.app/

At the Greatest Game I got a ticket for someone who had lived in Warwickshire but had emigrated to Canada.

Some people are complaining about long lost fans emerging from the woodwork, but I am pleased to see them back.  'Jack' used to live near the training ground, but is now in rural Kent.   He was a season ticket holder and also player shirt sponsor.   He is bringing his two adult daughters on Sunday.

Former Addick in charge at Dripping Pan

Former Addick Bradley Pritchard has been appointed manager of Lewes FC.   The midfielder played over 100 games for the Rocks between 2021 and 2024.

Initially hired by Charlton as a performance analyst, Pritchard was then given a footballing contract by the Addicks and made a total of 79 appearances scoring three goals.

Let go by Charlton, he went to Leyton Orient and then reverted to the non-league with Greenwich Borough.

I would describe Pritchard as industrious rather than skilled, but good luck to the 39-year old who has stuck with a football career through thick and thin.

Jones can be excused emotional response to victory

Nathan Jones has attracted some criticism from the tabloids for his emotional reaction to Thursday's victory, but he and the club have been through the mill as the BBC acknowledges: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c991y2zgp77o

The Currant Bun report on his 'bizarre antics' is here: https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/34980600/nathan-jones-charlton-praying-wycombe-playoff/

At least Charlton is getting some attention for once, even if some of the publicity is negative.

I was surprised to learn that one of my granddaughters, who has shown no previous interest in football, but plans to move to Wales has applied with enthusiasm for a backroom job at Swansea City.

Charlton in Dreamland

The report from The Times this morning on last night's game (click to enlarge):

Godden delivers Wembley final

He was derided as a poor quality replacement for Alfie May at the beginning of the season, but Matty Godden secured a Wembley final for Charlton at The Valley this evening.

Matty Godden's goal nine minutes from time sent Charlton into the League One play-off final as they edged past Wycombe at The Valley.  In a second leg almost as tepid as the first leg, the tie was settled by Godden's 22nd goal of the season.

A long ball into the Wycombe penalty area was turned towards goal by Lloyd Jones and fell kindly for Godden to poke home from close range.

Charlton will now play Leyton Orient in the final at Wembley on Sunday, 25 May with the Addicks aiming to return to the Championship for the first time since 2021.

It was another night of few chances but Charlton, who finished a point and a place above Wycombe in the table, finally found a goal as attention began to turn to extra time.

Macaulay Gillesphey floated a ball from just inside his own half into the Wycombe box and Jones beat Adam Reach to it and steered towards goal with his right boot.

Franco Ravizzoli, who replaced the unwell Will Norris in goal, was a little hesitant to come off his line and could only block Jones' touch towards goal. It bounced into the path of Godden who chested down and turned into an empty net.

Jones had earlier squandered by far the best chance of the whole tie as, six minutes before the break, he totally miscued a free header from six yards out, diverting Godden's cross from the right fully 20 yards wide of the right-hand post.

Charlton went close again after the break as Thierry Small cut inside from the right but curled his left-foot shot just wide of the left-hand post.

Wycombe were second best and failed to fashion a clear-cut chance but did go close twice as the game wore on.

First Garath McCleary took Fred Onyedinma's cross but his shot was superbly blocked by Kayne Ramsay for Charlton before the rebound fell for Xavier Simons, whose shot was also blocked by Ramsay.

At full-time Addicks boss Nathan Jones was close to tears as thousands of Charlton fans spilled onto the pitch to celebrate.    He says that relief was his main emotion: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/nathan-jones-overwhelmed-with-relief-as-charlton-athletic-secure-league-one-play-off-final-place/

Transfer 'ambitions'

Charlton will work off pretty much the same transfer list whether or not they get promoted.   I suppose you could interpret that as ambitious in one case and less so in the other: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletic-set-to-work-off-same-transfer-window-wanted-list-even-if-they-win-league-one-promotion/

Thierry Small wants to ply his trade in the Championship, although Millwall seem to have lost interest.

It's Orient in the final

Today's the day: either Charlton fans will be heading to Wembley or will have the joy of heading to beautiful downtown Burslem next season to play Port Fail: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/wembley-or-bust-charlton-athletics-championship-dreams-on-the-line-in-huge-league-one-play-off-semi-final-decider/

Orient got through to the final and penalties and with momentum may pose a greater challenge than gritty and tenacious Stockport.

Radio 5 were bigging up Orient this morning but I would agree with the Orient fan who said that a Wembley staging of the Blackwall Tunnel derby would sell out the stadium.  Wycombe wouldn't be able to fill it despite its proximity to beechy Bucks.

The strange world of beechy Bucks

An old secondary school friend of mine lived in many different parts of the UK before returning to his native heath on retirement (TOWIE).

He reckoned that the best place he lived was the Isle of Wight (home to many Addicks) and the worst was High Wycombe.   He thought that the people there were odd and unpleasant.

He never met many Chairboys, but that's not so surprising as home attendances this season averaged 5,456.

For many years they were a successful amateur club and only joined the non-league system in 1985.  For over ten years they hosted Wasps rugby club and it is the sort of area that favours egg chasing.

The train from Leamington usually stops at High Wycombe and on a match day lots of fans of Premier League London clubs (plus QPR) would pile on.  Chelsea had a particularly strong representation.

Many years ago I went to see Rushden and Diamonds play Wycombe.  As I recall Irthlingborough's finest won and Sid and Doris Bonkers and the other away fans took exception to some of the decisions by the officials.

They then staged an away stand sit in and as I walked up the hill to the lane where I had parked my car, plaintive calls of 'Chairboys' drifted on the breeze.

Aneke is available and motivated

Super sub Chuks Aneke is available for tomorrow's play off match against Wycombe Wanderers and is extremely motivated: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletic-boss-expecting-extremely-motivated-chuks-aneke-for-wycombe-play-off-semi-tie/

Let's hope that the referee hasn't won this month's Specsavers voucher and is more used to officiating at cage fighting.

Backroom bosses answer questions

Having got married last Friday and having my eldest's 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday meant that I have not had much bandwidth for Charlton matters, but I was pleased to have a Charlton table at my wedding reception.

I have now read the CAST meeting with the non-executive chair and the chief operating officer.  It is informative on a range of topic (including the recent ticketing problems): https://www.castrust.org/2025/05/gavin-carter-assume-positive-intent/

On the whole I was reassured by the answers.    However, it is implicit that the owners are not going to splash the cash if we get promoted.    The Championship is highly competitive with spending patterns influenced by parachute payments.
