Cup victory for Charlton

Charlton comfortably beat League One side Stevenage 3-1 to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.   Miles Leaburn calmly slotted the Addicks into the lead before Ibrahim Fullah doubled the advantage with a goal on his first start for the club.  Luke Berry made the game safe as he headed in the Addicks' third after the break.

Having beaten Watford 1-0 thanks to Harvey Knibbs' late winner on their return to the Championship on Saturday, Nathan Jones gave his goal scoring signing his first start since joining from Reading.

Knibbs was one of 11 changes with Joe Rankin-Costello making his debut alongside Fullah at The Valley.

Leaburn, who scored 10 goals last season as Charlton won promotion via the play-offs, opened his account for 2025-26 as he slotted in Isaac Olaofe's pass after Dan Phillips had given away the ball.

Nine minutes later, Fullah made it a debut to remember as he outmuscled his marker to shoot home Henry Rylah's cross into the bottom corner.

Dan Kemp blasted over for Stevenage shortly after the break, while at the other end Taye Ashby-Hammond was on hand to keep the ball out after Berry had redirected Rankin-Costello's shot towards goal.

Berry did find the net soon after as he stooped to head home Daniel Kanu's cross to seal matters.

But Stevenage finished the tie strongly and cut the deficit when Freestone headed in Jasper Pattenden's cross before Phoenix Patterson forced a good save from Will Mannion.

Charlie Kelman saw a stoppage-time effort deflect just wide for the Addicks as they progressed to the next round.

Richard Cawley reports Nathan Jones praised Isaac Olaofe for the assist that led to Miles Leaburn's opener for Charlton  last night but also talked about the summer signing 'over-thinking' a good scoring chance in the first half.    Jones was also very bullish on Danny Hylton stepping up his coaching responsibilities following the departure of James Brayne to Sunderland.

Deal or no Deal?

We spent an enjoyable few days in Deal taking advantage of the sea air and some of the excellent food on offer.  However, from a footballing point of view, it was a desert.

There was initial excitement when our HST train stopped at Thanet Parkway, a station backed by Councillor Rick Everitt against 'know nothing' opposition.  It was even suggested that the estate containing the Rickhaus could be seen across the fields.

However, when we detrained at Ramsgate there was no sign of a civic welcome, not even a Millwall fan telling us we were not welcome.

Indeed, over the few days I saw hardly any evidence of football allegiance, although there was much background chat about golf and, like others, we were preoccupied with Wimbledon.   I did not see any shirts, badges or other tokens of support for Chelsea, Millwall, Palace, Gillingham or even Deal Town.  The one exception was a gentleman bursting out of his Arsenal shirt.

I did see one or two elderly gentlemen who fitted the profile of Desmond from Deal, but I could hardly approach them and ask, 'Are you Desmond from Deal, the scourge of Charlton managers?'  I might have ended up thrown off Deal Pier before I sampled the vegetarian cuisine on sale at the end (and very good it was).

Indeed, the main preoccupation in Deal seems to be walking the dog(s) who can have ice cream suitable for them served at the start of the pier or enjoy a veggie treat for dogs at the end.

The Times did have a good story about Millwall.   Apparently, the Rust Bucket is being refurbished.  The New Den was opened with a game against Sporting Lisbon, even bigger in the early 1990s than now.

The writer said that a typical Millwall supporter, overweight and covered in tattoos sat down in front of him with his son.   Impressed by their kit, he lad asked who the opposition were.  'Wankers,' replied his dad, 'Wankers.'

I did take a few days off electronically, but it is good news that Miles Leaburn has signed a new contract..  There is still potential to be realised.

Leaburn out for rest of season

Miles Leaburn is out injured for rest of season.  It is not quite clear whether this includes any play offs, so perhaps he might have an opportunity to come off the bench at Wembley and score the winner: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletic-striker-miles-leaburn-to-miss-rest-of-league-one-campaign/

Leaburn, Edwards out injured

Miles Leaburn will not be available against Huddersfield tomorrow. Nathan Jones: "It's not a matter of days, it's a weeks one. It gives someone else an opportunity. We have got to manage Miles slightly differently to other players - he is young and had an injury before."

Josh Edwards is another missing with a groin injury. Nathan Jones: "He is a lot closer than he was a week ago. He has done some training and we'll assess and see how he is." Dan Kanu rolled his ankle with the U21s.  Jones said, "We can't rush it."

Huddersfield are 7th from bottom in the form table, Charlton are 4th.   Huddersfield's home and away records are symmetrical in terms of wins and defeats (nine and six), although they have scored more goals away (29).

Interim Huddersfield coach Jon Worthington has dismissed speculation that the game could be a dress rehearsal for a play off contest: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/you-can-think-about-that-huddersfield-interim-boss-quizzed-on-potential-play-off-dress-rehearsal-at-charlton-athletic/

CAS Trust remind us that the Terriers have won the last five games against us: https://www.castrust.org/2025/03/no-walk-in-the-park-against-terriers/

I am sticking with my beginning of the season prediction of a 2-1 win.

Millers grind down Charlton

A resurgent Rotherham beat Charlton 4-2 at the New York Stadium today, leaving the Addicks 13th in the table.  The Millers went 2-0 ahead early doors, but Miles Leaburn gave a glimmer of hope with a strike just before half time, only for the home side to score a third.   Matt Godden scored a late goal ti keep the score line respectable.

Martyr to the cause Louis Mendez has commented: 'All over the place at the back today. Second came from the mistake from Jones, third from Small not reading a set-piece coming in and no one else dealing with it ahead of him either. '

I was hoping for at least a point today and Lloyd Jones is the last player I'd expect to make a serious mistake.

Charlton had not lost in the league since early December but were their own worst enemies in a sloppy performance.  Two goals in the opening 15 minutes from Andre Green and Alex MacDonald left the Addicks facing an uphill struggle – a mountain they never looked like climbing.

The Millers took the first chance that came their way after the visitors failed to deal with Joe Powell's cross from the left. Wilks deflected the ball into the path of Green and he tucked home from close range with the help of the right-hand post.

Before Charlton knew it, they were 2-0 down after inviting Rotherham in to make it two attempts, two goals.  Green turned provider, capitalising on a mistake by Alex Mitchell to get in behind the Charlton defence and feed MacDonald who finished with a shot across Maynard-Brewer.

Luke Berry had Charlton's first attempt on goal with a header that was comfortably saved by Dillon Phillips and the visitors' frustrations continued when Tyreece Campbell's penalty appeal was waved away following a tumble in the box.

Leaburn lifted the Addicks' spirits with a tidy finish from a low cross after Rotherham gifted back possession inside their own half – but Rotherham had the final word of the first period.  Charlton failed to deal with a free-kick into the box and Jules took full advantage with a looping header at the second attempt.  After the break Wilks put them 3-0 ahead.

Green's drive was well kept out by Maynard-Brewer after he was inexplicably played in by Charlton defender Mitchell and Rotherham peppered the visiting goal in the closing stages.  Cohen Bramall forced Maynard-Brewer into a smart save before the Charlton keeper denied Wilks and Joe Powell lashed the rebound over the bar.

Godden's pinpoint finish denied Rotherham the chance to move into the top half on goal difference but the afternoon belonged to the upwardly mobile Millers.

Commiserations to the away faithful who made the trip.

Leaburn brace gives Charlton victory

There was not a great deal of action in the first half. Wycombe edged possession but Charlton defended their box well, as to be expected.  Charlton were disciplined defensively out of possession.   Lloyd Jones was controlling the back line.  Best chance of the game fell to Luke Berry.

Charlton were shooting towards the Covered End in the second half.   Leaburn got across his man and volleyed it home at the beginning of the second half (around 50 seconds) into the bottom corner of the net.  The cross from Edwards caused chaos in the Chairboys defence.

Leaburn held his run just enough for the lino to favour the striker and he made it 2-0 on 54 minutes with a great chip over the keeper from the edge of the penalty area.   He risked taking the hugs from supporters in the far corner.

The Chairboys made a double substitution.

There was excellent defensive work from Coventry at the expense of a corner well won by Gillesphey.    Maynard-Brewer eventually gathered.

Alex Mitchell was seen holding his hip after a leg injury.  His attempt to carry on may have made it worse.   The physios were working on his knee.   He came back on, but the old school centre half did not look comfortable.

Wycombe were being denied time and space by Charlton.     The visitors made another two changes. Top scorer Kone came on from the bench.

Leaburn was booked for a foul on halfway, Harvey eventually got his way.   He had been trying to trick him into an illegal challenge.

A good pass from Berry finds Leaburn who beats the offside trap but shoots over.

T Campbell slipped through but shot over when there was space to the left of the keeper.

Leaburn was applauded off with a standing ovation after he had received treatment.  Ahadme came on.

Wycombe scored on 84 minutes, it was a good goal from Kone across Maynard-Brewer.

The keeper collected as Campbell threatened from a long ball.    He might have been able to head over the keeper.

Wycombe won a corner after a rather soft free kick.   The move ended In an Addicks free kick.

Seven minutes were added on.   Lloyd Jones was penalised for what looked a decent challenge so Wycombe have a free-kick 30 yards out and central.   Morley’s free kick went into the wall.

The whistle blew and the team second in the table were beaten.  Charlton moved to 7th for now.  Moaners asked for time to compose their complaints.

Official attendance 15,554, 1,457 Chairboys.

Nathan Jones suggests that Leaburn needs to 'knuckle down' and develop as a footballer: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-boss-jones-wants-trust-in-terms-of-miles-leaburn-development-after-brace-in-win-over-chairboys/

Good start not followed through

Charlton earned back-to-back League One wins as first-half goals from Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn earned a 2-1 victory over Cambridge.

They are now 11th in the table, but graphs from Louis Mendez show how difficult it will be to achieve a play off place.   Pessimists have pointed out that a much better performance will be needed against Wycombe.  There was also criticism about the failure to make substitutions until late in the game.

The Addicks had a dream start at The Valley, with Campbell scoring after just 36 seconds. He raced on to a hooked ball forward by Leaburn to fire through the legs of keeper Vicente Reyes.

Charlton extended their lead after 20 minutes, Macaulay Gillesphey flicking on Josh Edwards' long throw and Leaburn heading past Reyes from close range.

Cambridge pulled a goal back in the 51st minute through Elias Kachunga, a simple close-range tap-in from substitute Liam Bennett's low cross from the right of the penalty area.

United, who boast the worst away record in the league with just five points from a possible 33, hit the upright through Sullay Kaikai just before the hour mark.

Charlton midfielder Luke Berry, facing his former club, forced two saves out of Reyes after that but Charlton were unable to restore their two-goal cushion.

Nathan Jones told Louis Mendez, ‘it was a little bit hairier than it should have been. First-half, I thought we were excellent, really front-footed. Two up would have liked us to have got another one because I felt we had enough of the play and we had enough of the situations’

‘We could have the impetus to go on and score again. They were doing a good job. Sometimes, you don't need to just change stuff for the sake of it. Everyone knew their roles, they were doing it and then we just added a little bit more aggression later on'

Moaners show their ingenuity after 5-0 win

Last night I dreamt that Charlton beat Northampton 3-0, but as it turned out that was just the half time score and it ended 5-0.   Louis Mendez picks out the highlights here: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/the-lowdown-on-northampton-town-0-charlton-athletic-5/

What you also have to admire is the ingenuity of Charlton moaners.   First, they pointed out that Northampton were awful.   Undoubtedly the case, but you have to beat the team in front of you.

Second, they complained that Nathan Jones did not acknowledge the away support sufficiently after the game.  If this was the case, it might be understandable given all the criticism he has to put up with from fan 'experts'.   Needless to say, Jones was pleased with the win: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/nathan-jones-very-proud-as-charlton-rip-northampton-town-apart-after-being-vilified-over-the-last-few-weeks/

Third, it was pointed out that it will count for nothing if we can't beat Cambridge United.  Well, the three points still stand and it may have given the team a much needed confidence boost.

Greg Docherty scored twice as Charlton thrashed struggling Northampton 5-0 at Sickfields.

Northampton's woeful defending was ruthlessly punished and the game was effectively done and dusted before half-time with Docherty, Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn all scoring in the first 36 minutes.

Charlton led after just nine minutes when the home side failed to clear a cross and the ball dropped to Docherty, who drilled low and hard into the far corner.

Leaburn almost headed in a quick second but Charlton were dominant and they did not have to wait long to add to their lead with Campbell latching onto Leaburn's pass and finishing beyond Nik Tzanev.

Northampton were all at sea defensively and their afternoon went from bad to worse nine minutes before the break when Macaulay Gillesphey's long ball found Leaburn all alone in the penalty area and he calmly stroked home.

The Cobblers never threatened a comeback and Charlton piled on the misery with Docherty lashing his second from Luke Berry's cutback, before Danny Hylton came off the bench to score a fifth in stoppage time.

Over the festive period, to provide some non-festive reading, I am reproducing my series on what went wrong at Charlton on my Chatlton Retro site.  The first instalment takes the story as far as Dowie and Pardew: https://retrocharlton.blogspot.com/2024/12/what-went-wrong-part-1.html

'Matt's my boy'

Nathan Jones has taken on his critics by arguing that Matt Godden is a worthy replacement for Alfie May: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/nathan-jones-praises-gassan-ahadme-double-and-says-matty-godden-is-answering-questions-raised-by-alfie-may-departure/

May has scored fewer goals than Godden this season, although this may in part reflect his appearances for the Blues.

Jones explained that he didn't want to take a risk with Leaburn yesterday and had news about players returning: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/nathan-jones-explains-why-miles-leaburn-sat-out-charlton-win-at-walsall-and-gives-positive-update-on-another-absentee/

Jones sent off in 'Bristols' clash

Charlton beat Bromley 1-0 with a Leaburn goal last night in what Louis Mendez insists on calling the 'Bristols'?   Doesn't he know his rhyming slang or is he just winding us up?

Somewhat bizarrely, Nathan Jones was sent off, although apparently it only applies to this competition.  Louis Mendez explains: 'Adjudged to have touched the ball whilst it was in play. It was going out, nearly was out, and there wasn't anyone near it to try and keep it in but them appears to be the rules.'

Somewhat surprisingly there were nearly 3,000 there, but in large part this was because of a big turnout of Bromley supporters. Charlton fans in the West Stand had to cope with just one catering outlet open.

So we end up top of the Bristol Street Motors Southern Group C with nine points out of nine. Hardly a great achievement, but a win is a win and we might be able to progress.

Former Charlton chief executive Peter Varney commented: 'It usually takes a few matches for a young player to find his feet when moved up to the first team and it can be quite a nerve racking appearance on debut. In that context I was excited by Kai Enslin’s performance in the BSM Charlton v Bromley cup match on Tuesday evening. He showed pace, was not shy to tackle, constantly demanded the ball from teammates and made intelligent runs. Definitely one for the future.'

BTW, I am no fan of Shropshire's finest, but they have made a shrewd appointment in Gareth Ainsworth. I wouldn't have minded him at Charlton.

Last gasp win in Cup

Charlton are in the 2nd round of the FA Cup after a last gasp extra time victory at Southend United.  Moaners complained about a struggle against a non-league outfit, but like most National League sides the  Shrimpers are full time and the gap between the National League and the EFL has narrowed.

Gassan Ahadme scored a last-gasp extra-time winner as Charlton Athletic escaped with a thrilling 4-3 FA Cup win at National League side Southend.

Miles Leaburn and Zach Mitchell, scoring his first Charlton goal, had put the Addicks in control during the first half.   Leaburn headed home a left wing cross from Josh Edwards after just nine minutes.  Mitchell nodded in a left wing free from Terry Taylor on 40 minutes.

The Addicks wasted a golden chance to go 3-0 ahead with skipper Matty Godden firing a shot against the crossbar when he was clean through on goal with only the keeper to beat.

But their non-league opponents fought back through a Jack Bridge penalty on the stroke of half time and Oliver Coker’s 52nd-minute strike.

Matty Godden put Charlton back in front midway through the second half, sliding the ball in from close range.

But Joshua Edwards’ own goal in stoppage time sent the tie to extra time.  Louis Mendez thinks it went in off Gillesphey.

However, it was Charlton’s turn to strike in time added-on when Ahadme sent the Addicks into round two following a mix up in the home defence.

Adahme's search for goal will end soon

Chuks Aneke is confident that Gassan Ahadme will soon find the back of the net: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/charlton-athletic-supersub-aneke-backing-summer-striker-signing-to-hit-goal-trail/

He is also looking forward to the return of Miles Leaburn whom he praises.   Leaburn will feature for the under 21s at The Valley tomorrow night, reports Richard Cawley.

There is no basis in rumours that Ahadme is undertaking barn door training in Kent.

Transfers may not be over

Nathan Jones has yet that there may be yet be transfer business to be done, although 'We're in a really good place.  We've had an excellent window#: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/sport/until-i-get-told-otherwise-charlton-athletic-manager-nathan-jones-on-state-of-play-before-tomorrows-transfer-deadline/

Owners stand firm against bids

A pall of gloom has understandably been hanging over SE7 at the parade of underwhelming candidates for manager, including one from Mumbai City who was best mates with one of the ownership group at Oxford.

However, at least the owners stood firm against bids for George Dobson, Corey Blackett-Taylor and Miles Leaburn: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-fended-off-wrexham-and-derby-county-bids-before-transfer-window-closes-with-miles-leaburn-also-attracting-approaches/

Leaburn's massive summer

It's a big summer ahead for Miles Leaburn and Dean Holden thinks that pre-season will be beneficial for him: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/that-will-be-massive-for-him-charlton-striker-miles-leaburn-has-big-summer-ahead/

That is, if he stays.  Necessity means that Charlton have always been a selling club, but I think that one more season with us would be positive for his development.

Win in last home game

Charlton beat Port Vale 3-3 at The Valley this afternoon and are now assured of a top half of the table finish.

585,652 supporters missed the win.

After 14 minutes the ball is whipped in from the right by Albie Morgan. Forrester doesn't get enough on a clearing header and the ball drops to Tyreece Campbell who drills it low to beat Stone at his near post.

Steven Sessegnon went close to adding to Charlton's advantage but his 25-yard effort dropped narrowly wide of the right upright.

Jes Rak-Sakyi gets the ball on the right of the area, turns away from Benning in a 50-50 duel, cuts inside and bends the ball into the far corner.  2-0 on 59 minutes.

Benning's inswinging corner breaks for Plant who volleys home from close range to make it 2-1 on 62 minutes.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer denied the visitors an equaliser, pushing away Tom Conlon's free-kick.

Charlton break down Vale's left and the ball is worked across for Miles Leaburn to score at the far post on 78 minutes

Politic's shot is handled in the area and Taylor scores from the spot on 97 minutes.

Charlton scrape home

Charlton managed to beat Burton 3-2 at The Valley this afternoon, once again finding it difficult to hold on to a lead.  The Addicks went up to 10th, but are eight points behind Portsmouth.

Miles Leaburn took a knock at Bristol and was replaced by Bonne against Burton Albion.  Egbo also returned for the first time since October.  Sessegnon was managing his injury.

After a slow start, Campbell had an attempt on goal but MacGillivray saved.

Some magical work by Rak-Sakyi saw him score on seven minutes.  He created it all himself.  Burton had eight players in the penalty area/  He completely fooled two players.

Thomas put in a cross for Ral-Sakyi, but his effort went straight at the keeper.

Morgan shot straight at MacGillivray after being set up following some good work by Bonne.

A great run by Fraser, he poked it forward to Rak-Sakyi who made it 2-0 on 16 minutes.

Following a Charlton corner, Campbell put the ball just over the bar.

A Burton corner was unproductive.  Fraser took a shot, but he was off balance and it went over.

Dobson had to concede a corner after Egbo was caught out.

In the second minute of two minutes added on Maynard-Brewer dropped the ball leading to an open goal and Burton made it 2-1 through Hughes.  They had been getting back into the game.

HT: Addicks 2, Brewers 1

Campbell provided a cross and Bonne read the situation well making it 3-1 on 49 minutes in front of the Covered End.

A Burton free kick led to a corner.  Bonne headed it away.

Helm was replaced by Ahadme.   MacGillivray saved from Bonne at the second attempt.

It was a triple substitution for Charlton on 66 minutes.   Egbo came off and Kane came on, as did Henry and Payne.  Fraser came off as did Dobson who had taken a knock in the penalty area.

Bonne hit the bar from the edge of the area.  Lunar player Moon got a yellow card for a foul on Campbell.

Following a corner conceded by Payne, Burton got the ball just over the line to make it 3-2.  Once again Charlton were vulnerable from a set piece.  Burton had so much space at the far post.

Thomas had to concede a corner, but it was eventually cleared.   The substitute Carayol went for goal and was not far wide, catching Maynard-Brewer by surprise.

Kane put in a good cross but Rak-Sakyi fired over.   Payne got a yellow card for a challenge.

On 87 minutes Bonne and Morgan came off and Mitchell and Kanu came on.  Charlton conceded another corner, but it ended in a free kick.

Five minutes were added on, the Burton manager berating the fourth official for not giving more.  Payne got a second yellow card for a foul and was sent off.  The free kick went over the crossbar.

A late Burton corner was dangerous but unproductive.  Hector got a yellow card.  It  had been a scrappy second half.

Report from Louis Mendez and comments by Dean Holden here: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/dean-holden-said-he-had-to-be-careful-with-how-he-measured-his-half-time-team-talk-during-charltons-win-over-burton/
