Valete, Andrew Shinnie

Out of favour with Nigel Adkins, Andrew Shinnie is leaving Charlton: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/andrew-shinnie-confirms-charlton-athletic-exit-changes-in-management-didnt-go-in-my-favour/

Opinions will differ.   I thought he was quite a cultured player, but I can also see the case for a thorough clear out.

Time running out for Shinnie

Why does Andrew Shinnie no longer feature in Nigel Adkins's plans?  Benjy Nurick attempts to find the answer: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/time-is-running-out-for-andrew-shinnie-to-make-telling-contribution-as-charlton-face-play-off-crunch/

In short the answer appears to be that the new manager favours a different style of play and Shinnie doesn't fit into it.  Alex Gilbey has been brought back in and Jake Forster-Caskey is seen as a key contributor so there is not a lot of room in midfield after the Watson/Pratley role has been taken into account.

A number of fans have commented on social media that Shinnie is a creative midfielder who has something to offer.  At least he should be on the bench rather than running forlornly round The Valley.

Charlton fight to win

Charlton fought back from being 0-2 down to beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 at The Valley tonight.  It was 2-2 at the break after goals from Shinnie and Forster-Caskey.  Washington scored the winner on 83 minutes after a battling second half.

This was the first time Charlton have conceded the first goal and gone on to win the game since the play off final in 2019.

Conor Washington said: 'We gave ourselves a mountain to climb, but we showed great character.   We showed fight, determination and grit.  The last fifteen minutes we were right on top.  Jacko is really pleased with the come back.'

Jacko said: 'Unbelievable.   The effort and the spirit that they have shown has made me ever so proud.  I was disappointed with the two goals, not necessarily a fair reflection of the game so far.  They stepped up, they dug themselves back into that game.   We just needed to be a little bit calmer in our play, we showed that towards the end of the first half.'

Jacko said he did not know what would happen beyond tonight.

The game started at a high tempo.  Maatsen made an unnecessary shoulder charge in the area and the referee awarded a penalty.  Amos went the wrong way in response to Leahy's shot and it was 0-1.

A cheeky Rovers chip after a break saw Amos stranded, but the ball went just wide of the post.  Amos made a good save off Nicholson.   Charlton were struggling and were caught in possession.  Amos could not save a fierce shot from distance by Upson and it was 0-2.

Then Shinnie scored a crucial goal with a great finish to make it 1-2.  Stockley was fouled on the edge of the area and Forster-Caskey scored the equaliser from the free kick.

HT: 2-2

Upson got a yellow card.  Maatsen fed Millar but Washington shot straight at the keeper.  On 60 minutes a somewhat annoyed Millar was replaced by DJ.

Shinnie got a yellow card.   On 73 minutes Aneke replaced Stockley.  Hargreaves got a yellow card.

Rovers were running out of gas and Washington was causing them problems.   An Aneke header set up Washington and he scored from the rebound.   Morgan got a yellow card.

Five minutes were added on.  Keeper Day bought down Aneke and was sent off.   Pratley came on for Shinnie.   A last minute Rovers free kick spelt danger with their keeper up but they failed to threaten.

Charlton are in 6th place and look likely to stay there with Fleetwood 2-0 up against Ipswich.

We do need to work on our corners.   We had seven and they were all unproductive.

A bit underwhelming

A Luton perspective on Andrew Shinnie signing for Charlton (until the end of the season): https://www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/football/luton-town/luton-midfielder-shinnie-makes-his-charlton-move-permanent-3140829?fbclid=IwAR28Pf2sgJEYzm-0KFxfCOw4uTPU8KXIaP6eEJ_Wvl9582kYzqXB2Xs127A

I think that fans have been a bit underwhelmed by this and it is really an exercise in complying with the rules on loans.   Shinnie has some skill, enough for League One.   What happens to him next year will be one of a series of decisions to be made about what is needed to try for automatic promotion.

Midfield boost for Saturday

When Charlton face the Rocking Robins on Saturday, Ben Watson will be back in the squad (i.e., warming the bench) and Albie Morgan will be available for selection: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-handed-midfield-selection-boost-ahead-of-swindon-town-match/

Given the tendency of the midfield to evaporate into thin air in some recent matches (the tireless Jake Forster-Caskey excluded) any reinforcement of the squad is good news.

Notwithstanding his mistake in slipping on the Soak of Peterborough, I think a start for Andrew Shinnie will be particularly welcome.

Trio return for Posh clash

Darren Pratley and Jason Pearce are back from suspension for tomorrow's visit to Peterborough, while Andrew Shinnie returns from a spell injured: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-will-have-trio-back-for-posh-but-marcus-maddison-misses-out/

Shinnie has not been able to train much because of waterlogged pitches, so he is likely to be on bench warming duties which is a shame given his creativity.

I'm not sure what I would do about the war horses Pearce and Pratley.   Pearce has looked a bit suspect in recent games and Oshilaja is on song.   Pratley gives his all, even if that sometimes lands him in trouble.

He is not a cultured player, but he is a battler and that may be needed against the Posh.   I agree with the fan who tweeted that has more to offer as a ball winning midfielder than a centre back.  Others argue that age is catching up with him which has been the case for some time but he could do 60 minutes before being replaced by Shinnie.

Maddison will not be available to return to his former club.   The latest Voice of the Valley suggests that he was not a good investment and when he scored his only goal he was giving evils to Lee Bowyer rather than celebrating.   They may not have exchanged Christmas cards.

Rather unusually it is a 6.30 pm kick off tomorrow, something I almost missed.

Maddison injury not that bad

Richard Cawley of the SLP considers that it looks as if Marcus Maddison's injury is not too bad.  Andrew Shinnie will not be available for selection against Bristol Rovers: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-boss-not-able-to-put-timeframe-yet-on-marcus-maddison-injury/

Bowyer defends himself against tinkerman charges

Besieged boss Lee Bowyer has responded to criticisms of the fact that Charlton have made more team changes than any other club in League One.  Alan Curbishley has been emphasising the 'consistent team, consistent results' theme in his interviews.

According to Bowyer, the problem has been the state of the squad at the start of the season and injuries to key players since then: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/lee-bowyer-has-his-say-on-why-charlton-lead-the-way-for-most-team-changes-in-league-one/

I can see that, although I sometimes wonder about who starts and who gets substituted and when.  But those decisions are tricky for any manager.

Akin Famewo and Andrew Shinnie should be back for the game against Peterborough, although 'back' usually means a ringside seat on the bench: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-get-positive-news-on-injured-duo-with-marcus-maddison-set-for-scan-on-ankle-injury/

Marcus Maddison is going to have a scan on his ankle injury.

Smyth returns

Paul Smyth will be in the squad for the match against Plymouth Argyle on Boxing Day, although the implication is that he will be on the bench: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-have-attacker-back-for-plymouth-argyle-match/

Andrew Shinnie will be the next player back from injury in 10 days or so.

More injury blows

Paul Smyth is out for a month and the fact that he is a loan player appears to be an additional constraint: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-striker-ruled-out-for-up-to-a-month-with-midfielder-a-doubt-for-shrewsbury-match/

Andrew Shinnie also looks unlikely to be available for Shrewsbury.

Shinnie: why I joined Charlton

Although he got sent off there, Andrew Shinnie loved playing at The Valley.  When the fans got behind them, Charlton were a difficult team to beat.

Shinnie discusses the thinking behind his move to Charlton with Richard Cawley of the SLP: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/andrew-shinnie-on-factors-behind-his-loan-switch-from-luton-town-to-charlton-athletic-and-excitement-at-fans-returning-to-the-valley/

Andrew Shinnie and free kicks

Andrew Shinnie talks about his free kick technique and says that he expects to be first choice from now on: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/ive-been-bullied-off-free-kicks-before-by-lads-who-fancied-themselves-as-the-next-ronaldo-charltons-andrew-shinnie/

Shinnie says the Addicks can only get better: 'We’re a brand-new team. Lots of us haven’t played together. It’s difficult, with so many games we haven’t been able to train as a side and work on movements and patterns of play.'

'To get the results we’ve been getting and the clean sheets, looking strong as a team it’s actually better than you think because we’ve not been able to work on it on the training ground. As the weeks go on and we get to know each other better, we can only get stronger really.'

Fourth win on a spin

Charlton beat Oxford 2-0 at The Valley tonight to give a fifth clean sheet and the fourth win on the spin.  It is 22 years since we have been that tight at the back.

Both goals were scored in the first half and the Addicks were reduced to ten men in the second when Inniss was sent off for a second yellow card.  However, they managed the game well to secure the three points.  It was Charlton's first league victory over Oxford this century, the last win was in 1998.

Charlton did not start well and an early Oxford free kick on the edge of the penalty area saw Amos make a good save at the second attempt.  The Addicks struggled to get a hold on the game, the midfield in particular were losing the battle.   Perhaps pre-match moaners who said it was a mistake to play Pratley and Watson together might have had a point.   Inniss had to clear from an Oxford corner.

I was just noting that in the first half hour Eastwood in the Oxford goal had not been tested once when Shinnie put in a good assist to Washington who provided a crisp delivery to make it 1-0.

Oxford were still finding pockets of space, but in the first minute of time added on Charlton won a free kick in a good position and a powerful delivery from Shinnie made it 2-0.

Half time: 2-0

Watson got a yellow card which meant that he will not be available for Portsmouth.  A corner was won by Smyth but the effort from Maatsen was wide.  An Oxford free kick in a dangerous position went over the bar. Inniss got a yellow card for a foul on Eastwood.

Taylor got a yellow card for a foul.  Oxford made a double substitution.   Inniss received his second yellow on 65 minutes and was sent off,  Gunter got a yellow card.   Amos had to make a save.

Bogle was taken out on the edge of the penalty area, but there was no yellow card for the cynical foul to Bowyer's fury.   The free kick came off the wall.

Purrington replaced the tiring Bogle on 87 minutes.   A great run by Shinnie drew a foul.  Moore got a yellow card.   Washington was replaced by Forster-Caskey in time added on and Charlton ran down the minutes.

My man of the match: Andrew Shinnie.

Charlton have moved into the play off positions in 6th place.

Seething supremo Lee Bowyer called for more consistency from officials: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/lee-bowyer-calls-for-more-consistency-from-officials-as-ryan-inniss-is-sent-off-during-win-over-oxford/

Luton player on loan deal

Charlton are closing on a loan deal for Luton's Andrew Shinnie, reports Richard Cawley.

The Scot is an attacking midfielder: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Shinnie

Sanguine supremo Lee Bowyer has thanked Crystal Palace for being helpful with the signing of Ryan Inniss.  He talks convincingly of what the player can offer and how he can be developed: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-boss-grateful-to-crystal-palace-duo-for-helping-defender-deal-to-happen/
