The managerial merry go round

It is now evident that Dean Holden was sacked, apparently by text, without any consideration of a possible replacement.   Darren Ferguson was approached and, not surprisingly, turned the job down.  Chris Powell had no interest in becoming interim manager.

Lee Bowyer has been talked about.  While I would prefer not to have a retread, and some are upset by his departure for Birmingham, he would certainly be better than Lee Johnson.

It;s quite likely that Methven thinks that Bowyer would go down well with the Valley faithful.  He doesn't realise how some fans structure their whole lives around a total negativity and pessimism about Charlton.

Danny Cowley is at the top of one odds list.  The question is, did his ascent from non-league show that he was eventually appointed beyond his level of competence?

As Dave of Drinking During The Game points out in his latest post, the many owners have been offered a cheap punt on the EFL.  Charlie Methven seems to have told them that he could cut costs and increase revenues, whereas the fact the latter requires levels of investment that would attract fans back to The Valley.

A low cost solution could be to give Jason Pearce a few games to see how he does.  At least he knows how to organise a defence.   He could be helped by Curbs as an advisor.

The news that Jack Payne is going out on loan is encouraging: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-midfielder-jack-payne-to-make-mk-loan-move/   We also need to unload Charlie Kirk, who has never fulfilled his promise, and get rid of DJ.   This would free up some funds.

Payne's 'difficult' campaign

Jack Payne says it has been a 'frustrating' season for him, but he doesn't think he has been unfairly treated and he has been his own biggest critic: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/jack-payne-on-difficult-first-campaign-at-charlton-im-my-biggest-critic/

Three points on the road

Charlton moved back to 10th in League One after beating MK Dons 1-0 this evening.   Macauley Bonne was dropped after his social media antics and there were four changes overall: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/milton-keynes-v-charlton-athletic-team-line-ups-macauley-bonne-is-dropped-by-dean-holden-for-disciplinary-reasons/

Holden has now drawn a line under this issue: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/dean-holden-says-he-has-drawn-a-line-under-the-macauley-bonne-social-media-issue-after-forward-is-dropped-for-milton-keynes-trip/

Jack Payne struck the winner to condemn the Dons to their first defeat in eight games and leave them three points above the drop zone with three matches remaining.

Both teams struggled for fluency in the first half, with MK Dons forward and former Addick Jonathan Leko coming closest when his shot from outside the box was tipped onto the post by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

A terrific driving run down the left by Zak Jules three minutes after the restart led to him picking out Mo Eisa, whose shot was pushed away by the alert Maynard-Brewer.

It took until the 56th minute for Charlton to have their first shot on target when Steven Sessegnon's swerving strike from distance needed beating away by Jamie Cumming.

But he had no chance when Payne broke the deadlock on the hour mark by whipping a superb finish into the far corner from Jesurun Rak-Sakyi's lay-off, ensuring the Addicks bounced back from Saturday's 6-0 hammering at Ipswich.

The Addickted have been commenting on social media that Payne is an underrated player who should be used more.

Dean Holden saw it as the perfect response to last Saturday's drubbing at Ipswich and said it was a committed performance by players which saw the first clean sheet since February: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/dean-holden-win-at-milton-keynes-is-perfect-response-after-weekend-drubbing-at-ipswich/

Charlton scrape home

Charlton managed to beat Burton 3-2 at The Valley this afternoon, once again finding it difficult to hold on to a lead.  The Addicks went up to 10th, but are eight points behind Portsmouth.

Miles Leaburn took a knock at Bristol and was replaced by Bonne against Burton Albion.  Egbo also returned for the first time since October.  Sessegnon was managing his injury.

After a slow start, Campbell had an attempt on goal but MacGillivray saved.

Some magical work by Rak-Sakyi saw him score on seven minutes.  He created it all himself.  Burton had eight players in the penalty area/  He completely fooled two players.

Thomas put in a cross for Ral-Sakyi, but his effort went straight at the keeper.

Morgan shot straight at MacGillivray after being set up following some good work by Bonne.

A great run by Fraser, he poked it forward to Rak-Sakyi who made it 2-0 on 16 minutes.

Following a Charlton corner, Campbell put the ball just over the bar.

A Burton corner was unproductive.  Fraser took a shot, but he was off balance and it went over.

Dobson had to concede a corner after Egbo was caught out.

In the second minute of two minutes added on Maynard-Brewer dropped the ball leading to an open goal and Burton made it 2-1 through Hughes.  They had been getting back into the game.

HT: Addicks 2, Brewers 1

Campbell provided a cross and Bonne read the situation well making it 3-1 on 49 minutes in front of the Covered End.

A Burton free kick led to a corner.  Bonne headed it away.

Helm was replaced by Ahadme.   MacGillivray saved from Bonne at the second attempt.

It was a triple substitution for Charlton on 66 minutes.   Egbo came off and Kane came on, as did Henry and Payne.  Fraser came off as did Dobson who had taken a knock in the penalty area.

Bonne hit the bar from the edge of the area.  Lunar player Moon got a yellow card for a foul on Campbell.

Following a corner conceded by Payne, Burton got the ball just over the line to make it 3-2.  Once again Charlton were vulnerable from a set piece.  Burton had so much space at the far post.

Thomas had to concede a corner, but it was eventually cleared.   The substitute Carayol went for goal and was not far wide, catching Maynard-Brewer by surprise.

Kane put in a good cross but Rak-Sakyi fired over.   Payne got a yellow card for a challenge.

On 87 minutes Bonne and Morgan came off and Mitchell and Kanu came on.  Charlton conceded another corner, but it ended in a free kick.

Five minutes were added on, the Burton manager berating the fourth official for not giving more.  Payne got a second yellow card for a foul and was sent off.  The free kick went over the crossbar.

A late Burton corner was dangerous but unproductive.  Hector got a yellow card.  It  had been a scrappy second half.

Elerewe recalled

Deji Elerewe has been recalled from his loan at Wealdstone after Terrell Thomas was injured.   Charlton face the Stevenage team of charm merchant manager Steve Evens in the Carabo Cup on Tuesday.

Of the defenders out on loan, Elerewe was the best one to recall in my view.

Jack Payne has warned against complacency ahead of the Stevenage tie: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charltons-jack-payne-ahead-of-efl-cup-tie-at-stevenage-underestimate-the-league-two-side-at-your-peril/

Job done

Charlton will be in the draw for the second round of the FA Cup on Monday.

Jack Payne struck twice as Charlton eased past Southern Central Premier League Coalville Town 4-1.

Payne and Jayden Stockley put Charlton in charge but part-timers Coalville, who are 91 places below the Addicks in the football pyramid, gave the home side a scare when Ashley Chambers pulled a goal back just after the break.

However, Payne ensured there was no late shock when he made it 3-1 with nine minutes to go and a rasping drive from substitute Chuks Aneke late on wrapped up the victory.

Coalville keeper Paul White had already brilliantly clawed away a Tyreece Campbell shot when he was beaten by a header from the unmarked Payne in the 24th minute.

More slack marking from the non-league side allowed Stockley to make it 2-0 in first-half injury time when he headed home from a Payne corner.

Attendance 4,707.

New Valley record

A new Valley record of the lowest ever attendance for a first team match - 662 (26 away) - was set at tonight's pizza trophy match against Brighton and Hove Albion under 21s.   It was a wet and windy evening.

Jack Payne earned extra toppings when he scored in the 92nd minute, the ball squirming through the keeper's hands, to make it 2-1 and take the Addicks through to the knockout stage. Lavelle scored the first goal.

Zach Michell and Henry Rylah made their first team debuts.

Fans who saw the game were puzzled why Forster-Caskey is seen as a second string player.   This mystery may never be resolved.   They also agreed that Kanu was not ready for League One.

A win on the road

A 69th minute goal from Rak-Sakyi gave Charlton a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury this afternoon to take them 7th in the table.

The Addicks took the lead when Jack Payne got the better of Shipley to get to the byline, and his low cross was swept home by the Rak-Sakyi, who was in the thick of the action all afternoon.

The best chance of the first half came from Charlton - a cross from Steven Sessegnon found Rak-Sakyi who passed it into Marko Marosi's arms from a few yards out.

After the restart, the Shrews missed a sitter of their own - a volley from Jordan Shipley found Tom Bayliss at the far post who failed to connect well and send it over the line.

532 Charlton fans saw the win.

Scott Fraser was named man of the match by the Football League Paper, but fans had praise for Kirk and debutante Campbell.  Wollacott and O'Connell were in the League One Team of the Day.

Corey Blackett-Taylor could be available for Tuesday: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-receive-positive-prognosis-for-corey-blackett-taylors-hip-injury/

Charlton's first win in nine

The tunnel jump was back as Charlton beat Exeter 4-2.  Charlton are now 11th in the table.  As Curbs said, let's enjoy tonight.

An early effort by Rak-Sakyi was not far wide.   Charlton started quite brightly, but Exeter looked dangerous on the counter.

Charlton went ahead on 19 minutes through Leaburn, the ball taking a deflection after an assist from Dobson.  Brown came close to equalising for Exeter.

Charlton went 2-0 ahead on 23 minutes through an own goal after great work by Fraser on the edge of the area.

A shot by Harper from distance was not too far over.

A snap shot by Exeter on 36 minutes put them back in the game.

I thought that the right wing-back Caprice was being allowed too much space.

Curbs thought it was the best we had seen of Charlton this season in the first 20-25 minutes.   Scott Minto thought that Leaburn was fast becoming our number one striker.

HT: 2-1

Sessegnon managed to prevent Stansfield getting through on goal on 58 minutes.

Charlton were in danger after Fraser lost possession in midfield.

Leaburn required treatment and hobbled off.   Morgan came on.   Clare replaced Sessegnon.

The game became more open.  After an Exeter corner, the ball cannoned off the crossbar.

Steve Brown said we were giving away balls we shouldn't be giving away, but there were tied legs out there.

Kirk came off, along with Rak-Saki.  Payne came on along with Backett-Taylor.

On 81 minutes Aneke replaced Stockley.   Blackett-Taylor advanced on the wing, Dobson controlled the ball and Aneke scored off the post to make it 3-1.

In time added on, good work by Blackett-Taylor and Aneke allowed Payne to make it 4-1.

The referee gave a penalty against Aneke allowing Exeter to make it 4-2.   O'Connell was booked for kicking the ball away.

Curbs said it was a thoroughly deserved win.  Blackett-Taylor was devastating when he came on, he caused all sorts of problems.   The only downside was Miles.  Dobson was his man of the match.

Ben Garner reckons that Charlton would be six or eight points better off if Aneke had been fit all season: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-boss-ben-garner-makes-big-chuks-aneke-claim-after-4-2-win-over-exeter/

'We can still do it'

Jack Payne evokes the spirit of the win over Plymouth ahead of the visit of Gobby's Oxford United to The Valley tomorrow: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/were-still-the-same-team-that-beat-plymouth-5-1-jack-payne-confident-charlton-athletic-will-click-back-into-top-gear/

Gobby is under pressure from the new Indonesian owners to get Oxford out of League One and has been restrained in the bull**** this week.

CAS Trust think that a result is vital, but don't predict an outcome: https://www.castrust.org/2022/09/robinson-returns-as-we-need-a-return-to-winning-ways/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=robinson-returns-as-we-need-a-return-to-winning-ways

Oxford are 19th in the league but above Charlton in the form table.   Away from home they have won one and lost two.

A bumper last issue of Voice of the Valley will be on sale around the ground tomorrow.

Payne could be target for Oxford fans

Jack Payne is likely to be a target for Oxford fans on Saturday given his time at the Magic Roundabout, but that will only fire him up: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-midfielder-will-relish-any-stick-he-gets-from-oxford-fans/

Presumably they don't like Garner much either.

Oxford are now majority Indonesian owned, but their start to the season has been judged 'ponderous': https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/sport/22822442.oxford-united-co-owner-chairman-assess-start-season/

Defeat oop North

Charlton are down to 16th and three points above the relegation zone after a 3-1 defeat at Barnsley.

Barnsley opened the scoring on nine minutes with a rocket shot from distance by Benson which went into the top tight-hand corner of MacGillivray's goal leaving him with no chance.

Rak-Sakyi threatened, but was dispossessed and Morgan sent the ball high into the stands.

Morgan put in a long cross field ball but Blackett-Taylor shot over.

Rak-Sakyi was about to pull the trigger, but the defender was able to put the ball out for a corner.  Nothing wrong with Morgan's corner, but the move ended with Clare shooting over.

In the two minutes added on a Barnsley corner had to be cleared from under the crossbar by O'Connell, the follow up corner was unproductive.

Charlton had had some chances, but were not clinical in front of goal with shots blazing over the bar.  The tempo of the game was rather slow.

Scott Minto thought that it wasn't a bad first half in terms of performance.   Steve Brown was critical of the lack of closing down for the shot allowing a midfielder to pick it up.  We had picked ourselves up and played some good stuff, but we were too deep.  Peter Shirtliff had had situations as good as the Barnsley goal, but the final piece wasn't there.   Steve Brown said we hadn't had a shot on target (despite seven attempts).

HT: 1-0

Barnsley made it 2-0 on 53 minutes with a back flick in front of goal.   Charlton failed to deal with a ball on the left side of their penalty area with O'Connell caught in possession.

Leaburn replaced Blackett-Taylor on 58 minutes.   Kirk came on in place of Fraser.

Barnsley came close to scoring after Dobson gave the ball away in a rare error.   Charlton were looking shell shocked.   The game was slow and scrappy which suited Barnsley.

Charlton made a triple change including Rak-Sakyi who had picked up a knock. McGrandles replaced Dobson. Payne and Sessegnon came on.   O'Connell was just over the bar from a corner, another chance missed.

Williams fed an unmarked Cole who made it 3-0 for the home side.   On 84 minutes Charlton got a consolation through Payne who finished well after good work by McGrandles.

Charlton tried to apply pressure in the seven minutes added on but to no avail.

The pundits

Peter Shirtliff said that Charlton had played some nice football, but should have come in at least 1-1 at half time.  They gave two goals to Barnsley in the second half, although the home side had hardly dominated the game.

Scott Minto said it was a really poor second half.   Steve Brown thought that Rak-Sakyi and Blackett-Taylor were dangerous.  You couldn't defend your penalty area like we did.   Peter Shirtliff thought that the score flattered Barnsley.

Ben Garner: the difference between training and playing

Ben Garner said it wasn't good enough at both ends of the pitch, we didn't play with enough intensity. The first half overall was a very good performance.   In the second half it was moments, two very poor goals, you can't give goals away like that.   I'm not blaming anyone other than myself.   We've given them the game second half.  It has to improve and it's on my shoulders.  [Asked about the five substitutions] he said that Jes had rolled his ankle.  The players were trying possibly too hard.  The way we controlled the first half here away at Barnsley was fantastic, there were so many positives.  [Three shots on target for them, one for us].  We have to try and get back to where the club should be.  [Can the players handle the pressure?]  I don't know, there's a big gap between what I see in training and what I see in games.

Richard Cawley commented: 'Lot of talk internally at club about it not being a quick fix for Charlton, but this is their third season back in League One. And at the moment it's not really looking very promising - at all - for a Championship return.'

Praise for Payne

Ben Garner says that Jack Payne is a good role model for younger players at Charlton: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/payne-is-just-what-we-need-addicks-boss/

Ben Garner has told Louis Mendez last night that Chuks Aneke is still a doubt for Saturday's game against the Massives after hoping he'd be available. "Outside chance. Probably doubtful. Maybe. He's been on the grass today, he's picking up. This stage of the season it's certainly not worth risking a player.#

Latest move down the M4

27-year old midfielder Jack Payne is the latest Charlton recruit from Swindon Town: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/jack-payne-turns-down-bumper-swindon-town-deal-to-become-charltons-latest-transfer-window-addition/

Swindon badly wanted to keep him: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/the-lowdown-on-new-charlton-athletic-signing-jack-payne-the-third-swindon-town-player-to-make-se7-switch-this-summer/

Moaners have already started to complain about Payne, but Richard Cawley commented: 'Payne had some really strong interest from a lot of clubs. Can play as a number eight or 10. Swindon offered him a very good deal to stay but wants to be back at League One level.'

There is nothing wrong with recruiting players from a lower division if they are good enough.

Ben Garner has confirmed that Sessegnon playing just one half at Sutton was pre planned: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/fulham-loanees-minutes-were-pre-planned-in-charltons-draw-at-sutton-united/

Meanwhile AFC Wimbledon are working on a deal for Josh Davision: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/afc-wimbledon-working-on-permanent-deal-for-charlton-striker/

League Two does seem to be his level, but we need reinforcement up front given that Aneke is injury prone and Miles Leaburn is an emerging talent.
