Wollacott on his way?

Charlton are open to offers for Garner era keeper Joe Wollacott who has two years on his contract: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-ready-to-listen-to-offers-for-goalkeeper-this-summer/

Addicks loan player Steven Sessegnon has been released by Fulham: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-loanee-sessegnon-released-by-fulham/

Richard Cawley thinks that he will be initially looking for a Championship move.

Stockley a man with a point to prove

Dean Holden recognises that Jayden Stockley will have a point to prove when he returns to The Valley on Saturday - and he doesn't blame the former captain: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/hell-have-a-point-to-prove-charlton-boss-dean-holden-on-valley-return-this-weekend-for-jayden-stockley/

Joe Wollacott is back in contention for Saturday's game after playing for the under 21s against Bournemouth.  However, it would be harsh to displace in form Ashley Maynard-Brewer: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/joe-wollacott-set-to-be-back-in-goalkeeping-equation-for-charltons-fixture-against-fleetwood-town/

Chuks Aneke and Michael Hector completed 65 minutes in the game.   It will be a question of wait and see to assess how Aneke feels two days later, i.e., probably knackered.

Keeper transfer rumour

A speculative report is suggesting Championship interest in Joe Wollacott, presumably as a reserve keeper: https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/championship-transfer-interest-emerges-in-charlton-athletic-26-year-old/

Given the success of Ashley Maynard-Brewer, there isn't an assured future for him at Charlton.

Richard Cawley has also now run the story, it would be a loan deal.

Keeper options

Joe Wollacott faces another two weeks out with his broken finger.  The surgeon will take another look next week: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/keeper-set-to-see-specialist-as-addicks-boss-outlines-state-of-play-with-his-shotstoppers/

He is no longer sure of being first choice keeper after recent impressive performances by Ashley Maynard-Brewer.   Craig MacGillivray is likely to be offered the opportunity to leave in January.

Through to the fourth round

Charlton have gone through to the fourth round of the league cup for the first time since 2006, making ir a treble in cups in the last week.  Goalkeeper Joe Wollacott was the hero as the visitors beat Stevenage 5-4 on penalties in the Carabao Cup after a 1-1 draw.

The Addicks advanced to the fourth round, with Scott Fraser converting the winning penalty after Jake Taylor saw his effort saved by the Ghanaian.

Boro's Luke Norris had scored from the spot in the first half and it looked to be decisive until super sub Chuks Aneke fired home in the 87th minute.

Stevenage were gifted the opener in the 22nd minute when Charlton defender Richard Chin inadvertently handled in the area and Norris coolly converted the resulting penalty.

Stevenage continued to press, with Taylor forcing Wollacott into a stop before clipping the bar minutes later.

Charlton were much improved after the interval and with three minutes to play, substitute Aneke clinically finished to send the game to a penalty shootout.   It was his 17th goal as a substitute, a club record,

After four flawless spot-kicks, Wollacott dived to his left to save Taylor's, before Fraser made no mistake to send the Addicks through.

Ben Garmer would like Crystal Palace in the next round: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/id-love-charlton-crystal-palace-in-efl-cup-fourth-round-ben-garner-hoping-for-premier-league-club-in-thursdays-draw/

A win on the road

A 69th minute goal from Rak-Sakyi gave Charlton a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury this afternoon to take them 7th in the table.

The Addicks took the lead when Jack Payne got the better of Shipley to get to the byline, and his low cross was swept home by the Rak-Sakyi, who was in the thick of the action all afternoon.

The best chance of the first half came from Charlton - a cross from Steven Sessegnon found Rak-Sakyi who passed it into Marko Marosi's arms from a few yards out.

After the restart, the Shrews missed a sitter of their own - a volley from Jordan Shipley found Tom Bayliss at the far post who failed to connect well and send it over the line.

532 Charlton fans saw the win.

Scott Fraser was named man of the match by the Football League Paper, but fans had praise for Kirk and debutante Campbell.  Wollacott and O'Connell were in the League One Team of the Day.

Corey Blackett-Taylor could be available for Tuesday: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-receive-positive-prognosis-for-corey-blackett-taylors-hip-injury/

Charlton close to drop zone

Charlton confirmed their status as draw specialists with a 0-0 at Lincoln City today.  They fell to 18th in the table, just two points above the drop zone.

Each side had just one shot on target.

Louis Mendez commented: 'Thought Lincoln were awful and we weren't much better. Pretty naff game. Fair play to those who made it up here through the train strikes.' (658 Addicks)

In time added on in the first half there was a tremendous stop from the Addicks keeper, Joe Wollacott. Low and to his right.

The Addicks had their best spell after the restart as Charlie Kirk headed Jesurun Rak-Sakyi's corner wide before Steven Sessegnon blasted over.

Ben Garner defended his team, saying 'that performance didn't deserve to be booed': https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/that-performance-didnt-deserve-to-be-booed-ben-garner-defends-charlton-side-after-stalemate-at-lincoln/

He said 'we are still early in the process,' but for many fans time is slipping by.

BTW, the account tweeting yesterday under the alias of Joachim has been confirmed as false.

Wollacott not good enough says gospel singer

Joe Wollacott was benched for Ghana's friendly against Nicaragua on Tuesday, but is expected to feature in their World Cup squad: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-goalkeeper-benched-for-ghanas-friendly-win-over-nicaragua/

However, a gospel singer has said that Wollacott is not good enough, particularly in commanding his area and communicating with his defence: https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/SportsArchive/Jojo-Wollacott-not-good-enough-Sonnie-Badu-calls-for-new-goalkeeper-1630490

Richard Cawley of the SLP comments: 'We really should have more of this. Cliff Richard on why Harry Maguire merits a starting place. Phil Collins on why 4-4-2 is the best approach for England. Stormzy outlining better pressing tactics.'

Return of the Mac

Craig MacGillivray will stand in for Joe Wolacott at Barnsley tomorrow as the first choice goalkeeper is on international duty: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/return-of-the-mac-goalkeeper-in-line-to-start-for-addicks-with-wollacott-on-ghana-duty/

Chuks Aneke remains injured.  Ryan Inniss will be available after his one match ban, although that will be a mixed blessing as far as some fans are concerned.

Charlie Kirk is in the selection frame for Barnsley after being dropped: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/dropped-winger-is-back-in-charlton-managers-thoughts-for-barnsley-encounter/

Barnsley are currently 6th in the League One table and 5th in the form table.  At home they have won two games, drawn one and lost one.   Last Saturday they won 3-0 at Cambridge.

CAS Trust think that getting something from this game will be a tall order and a point on the road would be a good result: https://www.castrust.org/2022/09/a-tough-trip-to-barnsley/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-tough-trip-to-barnsley

Where's the beef?

Charlton are 14th in League One tonight after a 1-1 draw at The Valley with Forest Green Rovers.

The Addicks went ahead after nine minutes, Corey Blackett-Taylor collecting Jack Payne's pass before striking a right-footed finish into the roof of the net.

Blackett-Taylor failed to find the target with a number of other shooting opportunities in the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts paid the price for not making the most of their promising openings as Forest Green levelled on the stroke of half-time.

Charlton goalkeeper Joe Wollacott failed to hold Dominic Bernard's cross and Wickham was on hand to produce a first-time strike.

Charlton survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles in the second half, with Wickham also glancing a Regan Hendry corner narrowly past the far post.

Rovers keeper Luke McGee parried a Jayden Stockley effort, with Jesurun Rak-Sakyi also hooking an attempt over.

The Addicks were reduced to 10 men at the end of six minutes of stoppage time, Ryan Inniss receiving a second yellow card from referee John Busby for a late aerial challenge on Christian Marques.

At least one fan went away happy, winning £11,500 in the half time crossbar challenge.

Ben Garner thought that the second yellow card for Ryan Inniss was harsh and thought that there were a number of errors in the five to six minute period before Joe Wollacott spilled the ball to conceal the equaliser: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/ben-garner-defends-ryan-inniss-following-centre-backs-red-card-against-forest-green-rovers/

No international break for Charlton

There will be no international break for Charlton and Joe Wollacot will not be available for the Barnsley game.  Craig MacGillivray will deputise.   It was reported that he would be getting his kilt out of storage to join Dundee or Dundee United but the deal did not happen: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/no-international-break-likely-to-be-on-cards-for-charlton-athletic-as-barnsley-match-set-to-go-ahead/

Wollacott to face Brazil?

Joe Wollacott has been called up for the Ghana squad that is to play a friendly against Brazil: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-keeper-wollacott-set-to-face-brazil-on-latest-international-duty-for-ghana/

This could affect his availability for the Barnsley game depending on other international call ups.

Charlton go through on penalties

Charlton knocked Queens Park Rangers out of the first round of the Carabao Cup after a 5-4 win on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

The Championship side improved after the break when Wales forward Tyler Roberts took less than 20 minutes of his debut to blast the Super Hoops ahead as his superb right-footed effort nestled into the top corner.

But an even better goal levelled it as youngster Aaron Henry smashed a half-cleared corner into the top corner from the edge of the box in the 90th minute.

QPR's Stefan Johansen saw his opening penalty kick in the shootout saved by Joe Wollacott - the only miss from 12 yards as Eoghan O'Connell converted the winning spot-kick for the Addicks.

Charlton - who made eight team changes - edged a goalless opening period as Miles Leaburn had two early chances, while Diallang Jaiyesimi and Jake Forster-Caskey also went close.

Ben Garner commented: “A high performance game, a good level throughout. Really proud of our performance, especially first-half. They made changes and became stronger. Disappointed to be behind but reaction pleasing. Showed desire to get what we deserved from the game.”

QPR manager Beale said: ‘The best team on the night went through. Ben and his team were better than us, especially first-half. We were decent enough second- half. But we brought 3,000 fans here tonight and they wanted to see more from their team.    No complaints. Charlton for large parts of the first-half were better than us and that’s on me. It’s bitterly disappointing.”

Attendance was 5,629.

New arrivals on their way

Ben Garner never wants to see another first half like that against Derby County on Saturday.  He thinks that only Joe Woollacott was at the correct level and if it hadn't been for his heroics in goal Charlton would have gone behind: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/i-never-want-to-see-another-first-half-like-that-ben-garner-scathing-of-charltons-slow-start-during-win-over-derby-county/

Many fans have been critical of the failure to start with Dobson and think that the side improved considerably after he came on after McGrandles was injured on the half hour mark.

Garner hopes to announce some new arrivals shortly with both the defence and the forward line needing strengthening: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/ben-garner-says-charlton-are-hopeful-of-announcing-additions-soon-and-reveals-where-he-thinks-his-squad-is-short/

Louis Mendez provides his four takeaways on the game: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/four-takeaways-from-charltons-1-0-home-win-over-derby-county-you-didnt-see-that-coming-at-half-time/

Wollacot saved us from defeat

VOTV editor Rick Everitt provides four takeaways from Charlton's draw at Rotherham.  He says that Joe Wollacott justified his selection as keeper and we could have lost but for his second half heroics.  We failed to convert possession into enough chances, but there were some positives to take away from the match: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/four-takeaways-from-charltons-2-2-draw-at-accrington-wollacott-justifies-selection-but-possession-not-converted-into-lots-of-chances/

Ben Garner would like to be able to make nine substitutes like Premier League sides: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-boss-ben-garner-id-like-to-be-able-to-name-nine-substitutes/

Leaburnnn!

Charlton made a decent start at a wet Wham Stadium in front of 892 Addicks, but were unable to convert promising opportunities. Blackett-Taylor made a good move on 12 minutes, but DJ could not steer it goalwards.  Curbs had expressed some doubts about him before the game.

Accrington threatened on the half hour mark, but an important block was made after an initial header by Dobson.

A good move was started by Sessegnon, Albie Morgan made a surging run along two-thirds of the pitch, a ball back across from DJ on the overlap allowed Fraser to score the opening goal of the season and his first goal for Charlton on 35 minutes.

Morgan took a shot after a good move down the right by Clare but it went just over the bar.   Accrington manager Coleman remonstrated with the referee, about what was unclear.

Scott Minto thought we played really well, got the ball down.   Curbs said we never allowed them to get going in the opening phase of the game.   Steve Brown said that Woolacott had made a couple of good saves.  He was very comfortable passing along the ground.   Curbs warned that we needed to defend the set plays.

HT: 0-1

Accrington put a ball across the six yard box, but none of their players was close enough to take advantage.

O'Connell made a last ditch challenge to stop Hamilton equalising.

Morgan delivered but a Stockley header was just wide of the post.

A McConville strike was saved by Woolacott at the expense of a corner.   This corner and a second one were unproductive.

Woolacott had to make another save.  DJ was fouled and the Accrington No.3 was booked.   The home side had raised their tempo.

A clash of heads required a head bandage for Inniss.   Accrington advanced on the Charlton left, got over Inniss and Clare with a lofted shot and McConville on his own scored the equaliser into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

Accrington made a substitution, while DJ went off.and Leaburn came on.  Morgan came off and was replaced by McGrandles.

Blackett-Taylor came off and Payne came on for his Charlton debut.  Leaburn had to make two clearances from an Accrington corner.

Six minutes were added on.  There was great work on Segnesson on the left who combined with Kirk, Payne put in a cross and Leaburn scored from the far post with a header!   But then Accrington scored an equaliser when it looked like Charlton had all three points.

The pundits

Scott Minto said in the second half we were lucky to take a point.  Steve Brown said they had dominated the second half.  They were a completely different side.   We needed to be more compact. Curbs said he would have taken a point.   Steve Brown said he thought Wollacott was our man of the match.   We might not see the best Charlton side or performances for another six weeks.  Curbs said there were a lot of straight balls and more angled balls were needed.

Charlton will play to strengths against Accrington

Ben Garner insists that Charlton will play to their strengths against Accrington tomorrow and not try to out run them: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/we-need-to-play-to-our-strengths-ben-garner-on-charlton-athletics-league-one-opening-day-challenge-at-accrington/

Joe Wollacott is number one keeper and will start against Accrington tonorrow: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-boss-confirms-joe-wollacott-will-start-season-as-number-one-goalkeeper/

Richard Cawley reports, 'No Chuks Aneke for tomorrow but McGrandles and Payne will both be in squad despite lack of pre-season friendly minutes.'
