Was Holmes criticising supremo?

In what might look to some like an implicit criticism of Charlton chief Karl Robinson, star player Ricky Holmes has said that he would not have let Lee Novak and Andrew Crofts leave the club: Star's regrets

In particular he was gutted to see the departure of Novak with whom he roomed. Who he will have to share with now remains to be seen.

Farewell then, Andrew Crofts

Andrew Crofts has left Charlton after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. Something of a journeyman footballer, he had become a fringe player. However, he tried his best and once again we use the words of the newsreels on the departure of Neville Chamberlain as prime minister, 'Thanks for all you tried to do.'

As with the departure of Lee Novak, the streets around The Valley have remained quiet and there have been no reports of disgruntled fans rending their shirts.

Red card takes edge off victory

A red card for Andrew Crofts took the edge off Charlton's 2-1 victory over Exeter City in the Carabao Cup. A fuming Karl Robinson implied that the Addicks are being targeted by referees: Cup victors

The supremo was in a defiant mood after the game, giving it large. In a post match interview with Louis Mendez before he headed to Liverpool he said that he did not care if he 'got done by the FA': Tough talk

There were seven Academy graduates in the side and they all played their part. The goals came from Billy Clarke and Regan Charles-Cook.

308 Addicks made the trip to Devon in an attendance of 2,699.

Coaching departures

Charlton's coaching bench will no longer be overstocked with Simon Clark and Richie Barker departing, meaning that the only senior coach left is Belgian front man Chris O'Loughlin: Valete

Accentuate the positive

Andrew Crofts tries to put a positive spin on Charlton's recent performances, emphasising the extent to which they have been unbeaten: 18 Cup Finals

What that conceals, however, is a propensity to draw matches, often because of a failure to hold on to a lead. The most usual result for Charlton, home and away, is a draw (thirteen in all). Admittedly, they are second in the form table.

Draw is good result

An away point was really the best result Charlton could hope for at Southend today. A 90 minute equaliser scored by Andrew Crofts made it 1-1 for a share of the points.

Simon Cox put the Shrimpers ahead halfway through the first half.

However, Joe Aribo and Jorge Teixeira were then both denied by Southend goalkeeper Ted Smith before the Shrimpers almost made it 2-0 when Stephen McLaughlin fired against the right post. In reply, Ezri Konsa and Jordan Botaka were both .denied by Smith.

The Crofts goal was made possible by excellent work by Aribo who earlier had hit the bar. Shortly before the goal Phillips had denied Atkinson to stop the Shrimpers going 2-0 ahead.

Lookman was omitted from the side, having been diagnosed with 'transferitis'.

About 1,800 Addicks made the trip. They were praised by Karl Robinson, along with Aribo after the match: Giving youth a chance

Charlton remain 12th.

North Korean flag incident

Like many fans I saw the North Korean flag displayed at The Valley yesterday. This report suggests that after the game a young fan with the flag was pushed against the wall by security guards who carried no ID: Incident

0-0 at the break

Charlton and Scunthorpe were 0-0 at half time tonight after a tight first half. The Addicks were playing a 4-5-1 formation with Magennis up front, supported by Lookman on the right. Ajose was relegated to the bench. Patrick Bauer and Johnnie Jackson were in the side which lacked Ricky Holmes because of injury.

Charlton stepped up the pressure around the half hour mark, but then the Iron came back into the game. Rudd had to save well from a corner. Lookman applied pressure just before the break.

In the second half, Charlton had some chances, but also had to defend with Pearce and Bauer making excellent contributions. Substitute Botaka had a chance to score and in time added on Johnnie Jackson hit the post from a free kick.

Given Scunthorpe's home record this season, 0-0 is a respectable result. Charlton remain 14th.

Russell Slade praised a 'really solid' performance by his players: Iron will

A Northern Addick who was there commented, 'I thought we were decent enough last night; clearly we were set up not to lose, which in the end may have denied us all three points, but I suspect most of us would have taken a point at the start so it would be carping to complain subsequently.

Pearce, who I criticised after Saturday, was much more like the player we'd been told to expect, presumably as a direct result of having the solid Bauer next to him;all four defenders looked assured, with Solly increasingly dangerous going forward.

I like Crofts more and more every time I see him, especially as he seems to receive so little in the way of support from the lightweight Foley, while Jackson and Ulvestad worked their guts out all night - what a shame the skipper's brilliant free kick couldn't have crept in.

Magennis was excellent up top on his own, never giving up in his attempts to bring others into play and Ademola... well Ademola was wonderful; he's way too good for this level of course, but sadly our set-up meant that we were unable to exploit the fact that they detailed two men to look after him all night.'

Elsewhere, former Addick Simon Makienok scored a hat trick in Preston's 3-2 victory at Bournemouth.

Promotion still in our sights says Crofts

Promotion is still in Charlton's sights, according to midfielder Andrew Crofts. He reckons the Addicks were hard done by at Bury and unlucky to come away without something: Rallying the troops

Addicks swoop for Crofts

Charlton have signed 32-year old midfielder Andrew Crofts who was released by Brighton and Hove Albion this summer after an injury plagued four seasons with the Seagulls. One for the treatment table then: Signing

After Stephen Henderson celebrated his signing for Notts Forest, the clear out of keepers was completed with a network move. Marko Dmitrovic has left The Valley for Spanish side AD Alcorcon.

Andrew Crofts to appear in Crown Berger Cup

Midfielder Andrew Crofts is training with Charlton today and is expected to feature in the Crown Berger Cup at Park View Road on Saturday: Andrew Crofts

The 32-year old played with Brighton and Hove Albion and Gillingham, but is now a free agent. He is a former Wales international.

Some Charlton fans think that he is not the midfield playmaker we need, others that we could do worse. Needs must.

Jonathan Acworth has claimed that this was a recommendation made by him, so possibly we will see him in the dugout at Park View Road.
