Charlton never make it easy. In a dramatic play off final at Wembley today, Charlton came from one goal behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 with a last minute goal to secure promotion to the Championship.
A disastrous own goal in the fourth minute cast a pall over proceedings. I think we use back passes too much at The Valley and Phillips was not able to deal with one from Naby Sarr. But 'The Cat' had his claws out and, like Richard Rufus in 1998, Ben Purrington scored his first goal for Charlton from a Taylor assist to level things up before half time.
Like many others, I thought that the pace of Williams made a big difference when he came on in the second half. All Sunderland could do was foul him.
Sunderland started to pile on the pressure in the last quarter of an hour, but the Addicks stood firm and in time added on Patrick Bauer scored the winning goal.
It was great to see Alan Curbishley shake hands warmly with Lee Bowyer. Grown, even elderly, men embraced me and one kissed me on the cheek.
If we had lost, the future for the club would have been bleak. Now we may keep most of our best players and there is an enhanced chance of new ownership.

Charlton rarely make it easy for their fans, but their victory over Doncaster Rovers at The Valley tonight was all the sweeter for being hard won. My intuition was that it would go to penalties which is why I booked a hotel in Greenwich.
I don't think we were at our best tonight. Aribo and Taylor were below par. But when a missed penalty from Donny settled matters, there was a massive pitch invasion. Such scenes of joy have been missing from The Valley for many years.
After a thundering start a headed goal from Bielik in the second minute seemed to put the Addicks on course for victory. A second goal would have settled matters, Donny managed to equalise on the night out of nowhere in the 11th minute. A smart flick from Herbie Kane allowed Rowe to score with what was admittedly a good shot which gave Phillips little chance. The defence seemed to have disappeared. A brilliant low save from Dillon Phillips stopped ex Millwall player Marquis from making it 2-1 on the night shortly afterwards. But Donny's confidence had been given a boost.
The second half became increasingly fractious and had few chances of note, although Josh Parker prodded narrowly wide from a ball in from Taylor, before Butler rose high at the back post to head in Ali Crawford's corner late on and send the match into extra time. We seemed to surrender possession too easily.
Marquis put the visitors ahead on 100 minutes with his 26th goal of the campaign but the Addicks hit back immediately through Pratley to send the game to penalties. The players of both sides were clearly tiring by now.
The police came on the pitch at the end of the game to talk to the referee and apparently the penalties were taken at the Covered End for safety reasons.
Chris Solly, who had come on as a substitute, was the unlikely first penalty taker (although he is club captain) but his shot was a crisp one. Cullen made no mistake with the second and Taylor settled any fears that he might miss. Naby Sarr missed the chance to win it in the shootout after Dillon Phillips had saved from the hapless Marquis, but Rowe blazed wide to send the Addicks to Wembley.
One little memory: a father and son have been sitting in front of me for about twelve years since the lad was about seven. At the Rochdale game he brought his girl friend, Last night father and son took a smiling selfie together.
I travelled back to Greenwich in the company of celebrating French supporters. Slightly ironic as France 24 wanted me for a discussion at 5 pm and were not best pleased when I said no, commenting sarcastically 'Football must come first.'

Charlton went down 1-0 at Fleetwood Town this afternoon with their lack of firepower evident. Patrick Bauer was sent off for a second yellow. Charlton are now 5th in the table, although they are five points ahead of Peterborough who lost at home.
The first half was relatively uneventful. Reeves fluffed an early chance from a corner and a Curwen cross was headed off the line as was the Williams follow up. Louis Mendez commented that the midfield was decent, but there was nothing ahead of them.
Dillon Phillips was called into action several times after the break and acquitted himself well. He first had to dive to his left on 47 minutes to deal with a free kick given away by Bielik.
Parker came on after 54 minutes replacing Lapslie. The Addicks switched to a 4-4-2 with a diamond.
The home side made a double substitution on 61 minutes. A minute later Phillips had to save from Evans who pounced on a poor pass by Bielik. Two minutes later he punched away a corner and then had to claim another one.
Evans scored Fleetwood's goal from inside the area on 68 minutes.
Parker put the ball across the face of goal, but no one could connect. Reeves and Hackett-Fairchild were replaced by Fosu and Vetokele. Bielik and Sarr got a yellow card. After a mix up between Solly and Phillips, Evans missed an open goal. Bauer was sent off on 87 minutes.
As usual with Charlton matches, seven minutes were added on, but the Addicks were unable to make use of it.

Patrick Bauer has tweeted: 'Devastated to find out that today’s MRI confirmed that I have completely ruptured the fibular collateral ligament in Saturdays game against Bradford. I will be sidelined for a couple of months, but will work very hard to be back stronger!'

It is clear from this interview with Richard Cawley that Lee Bowyer has little idea about what is going on at The Valley, for example in crucial contract negotiations with Tariqe Fosu and Joe Aribo: I know nothing
It does look very likely that Patrick Bauer will leave as he wants to play at a higher level. There is also fresh interest in Magennis. Igor Vetokele is very likely to be loaned out because of his high wages.

Bowyer sees a physical centre midfielder as a priority, but admits there aren't many out there.

The rumour mill says that Charlton are in a race for the signature of Danny Newton with QPR and Blackburn Rovers. The former Leamington player was a prolific scorer for Stevenage last season.
One always gets many false rumours at this time of year, but the real puzzle at the moment is who is making decisions at Charlton. Someone clearly is, given the invitation to Mark Marshall to leave.
Perhaps the tea lady is making the decisions and starting the rumours.
Another rumour links Patrick Bauer with a move to Blackburn.
He may only be in charge until Easter Monday, but Lee Bowyer's Charlton won an emphatic 4-0 victory at Northampton Town this afternoon, greatly enjoyed by the 1,208 Addickted in attendance. The Addicks looked really dangerous in the final third.
On 14 minutes Page put in a great cross, the keeper got a hand to the header by Reeves but couldn't keep it out. The Cobblers tried to respond with an effort by Grimes which was just wide of the near post from 25 yards.
On 19 minutes there was a superb dummy from Ajose, Fosu picked it up and doubled the lead from the edge of the box. Six minutes later an Ajose shot was deflected wide and Bauer headed over from the corner.
A Fosu shot from outside the box stung the palms of the keeper. Following a free kick from Forster-Caskey, a Pearce header was cleared off the line.

Fosu made it 3-0 to Charlton when a 25 yarder found the bottom corner. Earlier Northampton had learnt that their Chinese investors had pulled out, and it was clear that the home support were not happy with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who had a scarf thrown at him.
Great defending from Bauer denied Long. Fosu was inches wide on 61 minutes. On 63 minutes Ajose was replaced by Mavididi. The substitute was soon causing problems and after an Aribo shot was blocked, an effort from Forster-Caskey was deflected wide.
On 67 minutes Zyro was replaced by Magennis. Pearce received a yellow card for excessive enthusiasm. The lively Fosu was just over from 35 yards. On 79 minutes Mavididi put in great work down the left and a Reeves cross to the back post was headed home by Magennis to make it 4-0.
It nearly became 5-0 on 81 minutes when Mavididi rounded the keeper, but somehow he managed to recover. Crooks received a yellow card for a foul on Mavididi. Charm merchant Pereira received a yellow for tugging back Dijksteel.
The Addickted were in great voice. After a chorus of 'We Want Roland Out', they sang, 'Are you watching Robinson?'
Charlton are in 8th place with a game in hand and the same number of points as Peterborough. They are two points behind Plymouth in 6th place.

There are always going to be injuries, but this reminds us that the biggest challenge to our promotion ambitions is the thinness of the squad.
Charlton will be without eight first team players for the FA Cup tie against Wimbledon on Sunday. Patrick Bauer had to go off with a foot injury on Tuesday, although his performance was rated as rather tepid before then: Injury worries
Robinson says he is not concerned about abuse from Dons fans, although it does not reflect well on them and perhaps they should move on. I do wish people would stop calling the game at the non-league Kingsmeadow ground a 'derby'.
Robinson also says that the timing of the Checkatrade trophy game on Tuesday against Swansea is not helpful. Charlton could have to face former Leamington ace Courtney Baker-Richardson who is in the Swans development squad.
When Jake Forster-Caskey can say in all seriousness and without fear of contradiction that tomorrow night's game against Rochdale is a 'big match', it strikes home the situation we are in. But we need the three points to keep our promotion challenge going. Then we won't have to play Rochdale again on a cold Tuesday night in November.
Rochdale are currently third from bottom in League One, although they are in a slightly better position in the form table. On Saturday they lost 3-1 at Oldham.
Manager Keith Hill admitted that it was a fair result, conceding that one of Oldham's strikers was 'free as a bird in the box' which does not suggest a watertight defence. Rochdale have not won any games away from home this season, but they have drawn five. We can do without another draw. Our last three home matches against them at this level have seen a win, a draw and a defeat. Last year we lost 0-1.
Last season they finished 9th and Four Four Two forecast a 7th place finish. The magazine described Dale as 'having a well-oiled conveyor belt' following the departure of a number of key players for the Championship. However, the club remains an attractive destination for players seeking a loan.
