Bowyer's boys make it a very Good Friday

He may only be in charge until Easter Monday, but Lee Bowyer's Charlton won an emphatic 4-0 victory at Northampton Town this afternoon, greatly enjoyed by the 1,208 Addickted in attendance. The Addicks looked really dangerous in the final third.

On 14 minutes Page put in a great cross, the keeper got a hand to the header by Reeves but couldn't keep it out. The Cobblers tried to respond with an effort by Grimes which was just wide of the near post from 25 yards.

On 19 minutes there was a superb dummy from Ajose, Fosu picked it up and doubled the lead from the edge of the box. Six minutes later an Ajose shot was deflected wide and Bauer headed over from the corner.

A Fosu shot from outside the box stung the palms of the keeper. Following a free kick from Forster-Caskey, a Pearce header was cleared off the line.

HT: Cobblers 0, Addicks 2

Fosu made it 3-0 to Charlton when a 25 yarder found the bottom corner. Earlier Northampton had learnt that their Chinese investors had pulled out, and it was clear that the home support were not happy with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who had a scarf thrown at him.

Great defending from Bauer denied Long. Fosu was inches wide on 61 minutes. On 63 minutes Ajose was replaced by Mavididi. The substitute was soon causing problems and after an Aribo shot was blocked, an effort from Forster-Caskey was deflected wide.

On 67 minutes Zyro was replaced by Magennis. Pearce received a yellow card for excessive enthusiasm. The lively Fosu was just over from 35 yards. On 79 minutes Mavididi put in great work down the left and a Reeves cross to the back post was headed home by Magennis to make it 4-0.

It nearly became 5-0 on 81 minutes when Mavididi rounded the keeper, but somehow he managed to recover. Crooks received a yellow card for a foul on Mavididi. Charm merchant Pereira received a yellow for tugging back Dijksteel.

The Addickted were in great voice. After a chorus of 'We Want Roland Out', they sang, 'Are you watching Robinson?'

Charlton are in 8th place with a game in hand and the same number of points as Peterborough. They are two points behind Plymouth in 6th place.

Convincing win for Charlton

Charlton secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Walsall at The Valley this afternoon, enabling them to hold on to their play off place. They are now just two points behind Bradford who lost at Bristol Rovers. It wasn't entirely straightforward and bringing on Fosu in the second half was a great substitution. The combination of his pace with that of Mavididi allowed the Addicks to dominate play more.

Charlton started brightly, although the returning Chris Solly picked up a yellow card for a foul on 10 minutes. There were chants of 'We Want Roland Out'. It appears that there is now a preferred bidder and a new process of due diligence has started.

Walsall were sitting deep when out of possession and it was difficult to open them up. Magennis broke away and put in a low effort but it was a very tight angle and the keeper was able to tip the ball round the post.

Then on 31 minutes Joe Aribo took advantage of a Mark Marshall cross from the left to put the ball in the bottom corner of the net with a controlled volley. It was his third goal in four home games at The Valley. On 35 minutes Mavididi rattled the bar.

Then on 41 minutes Otzumer took advantage of a cross from Leahy to head the ball into the net to make it 1-1. The former Charlton youngster was released because of his height.

HT: Addicks 1, Saddlers 1

On 48 minutes Lennon was caught in possession and Walsall were able to rattle the bar. Magennis burst through on 50 minutes, but shot straight at the keeper. On 52 minutes Fosu replaced Reeves.

On 61 minutes Mavididi went for goal from a very tight angle when Arbo was screaming for the ball in the middle.

Charlton's crosses were often poor and once again their corners were below the required quality. On 64 minutes Amos reacted well to keep a Walsall corner out. As the Saddlers stepped up the pressure, Bakayoho threatened but his shot fortunately ended up in the side netting.

Charlton hit the woodwork for the second time in the match on 69 minutes when Magennis hit the post with a header. On 71 minutes Roberts made a great save from Konsa. It was difficult to see why Charlton were unable to score in the ensuing scramble.

As Mavividi burst through with great pace, Roberts managed to put the ball in his own net to make it 2-1. On 86 minutes Walsall had an unmarked man on the far post, but were unable to take advantage.

Marshall had been working hard and went down with cramp. The referee gave him some treatment and then he was replaced by Ahearne-Grant.

Mavididi made it 3-1 on 89 minutes. He burst into the box, cut inside a defender and fired past Roberts. Five minutes were added on and once again Charlton's game was virtually the last to finish.

Apparently one signing is almost over the line and negotiations are continuing with Palace about a loan.

By the skin of our teeth

Charlton managed to beat Oldham 1-0 at The Valley this afternoon, but it was pretty desperate stuff. Charlton are now 8th in the table.

In many ways the most interesting news of the day was about an argument between the manager and the owner. I was told about it before the game, but more details emerged after the game when Karl Robinson talked to a fan in the car park, a conversation which he shared on Twitter.

Robinson had four players lined up to come in, including Gleeson from Birmingham and Carruthers from Sheffield United. Duchatelet refused to allow the deal to go ahead and Robinson called him an idiot, seemingly more than once. It was not an appellation that the Belgian enjoyed.

The first half was largely a lacklustre affair, although Holmes did hit the bar from distance in the opening minutes. The moment of magic was provided by Mavidid's goal on 27 minutes when he weaved his way past the Oldham defence and steered the ball into the net. In general, however, our efforts were very laboured. Some fans questioned the contribution made by Magennis who often seemed to be too static.

In the second half we kept being pushed back by Oldham and started to defend too deep. It increasingly looked as if the final score could be 1-1, but somehow we managed to hang on.

Rob Hunt almost had the visitors back on level terms moments later with an effort that flew just over the crossbar. Ben Amos had to be alert five minutes after the break to keep out Oldham striker Aaron Holloway, while Holmes' curling shot was tipped behind at the opposite end by Placide on the hour (who managed to pick up an unusual yellow card).

Oldham upped the tempo and Holloway was once again denied by Amos, who stuck a a leg to block the attempt at the expense of a corner as the Latics pushed for a leveller. But substitute Karlan Ahearne-Grant should have wrapped it up late on for the Addicks, instead placing his shot straight at Placide.

Mavididi to return

Arsenal's Stephy Mavididi is to return to The Valley. A loan deal is expected to be signed tomorrow. He has been at Preston North End, but has had few opportunities: Loan deal

Fan Rich Pemberton has tweeted (and I agree with him): 'Good signing IMHO. Was electric in first spell for us before he got injured, hopefully he'll stay fit and recapture that form.'

Karl Robinson has denied any interest in Glaziers starlet Jason Loliko.

Jake Forster-Caskey has pulled his hamstring.

Katrien Meire starts interviewing 28 applicants for the vacant post of Sheffield Wednesday today. Karel Fraeye, all is forgiven.

Why Stephy Mavididi move broke down

Karl Robinson has explained why the move to bring Stephy Mavididi broke down. Charlton did not even get a chance to sit down and talk to the youngster for whom Arsenal clearly have other plans: Why move broke down

'That's football,' shrugged the phlegmatic supremo.

Robinson happy to wait for Reeves

Karl Robinson is happy to wait for Ben Reeves to decide whether he wants to come to Charlton. Championship clubs are still chasing the midfielder: Why the deal is taking so long

Which will be the longer wait? Reeves or a 161 bus?

One thing you can say about Karl Robinson is that he finds the time to keep the press up to date with what is going on.

According to a CAFC Facts and Stats tweet, Reeves is joining today (Thursday). Mavididi is going elsewhere and Watt is leaving sooner rather than later.

Apparently there has been Championship interest in both Watt and Harry Lennon. Karl Robinson has hinted that Watt may go, but Lennon is going to stay and get himself fit: Duo attract interest

Reeves spent the night in Greenwich and has emerged unscathed. Karl Robinson reckons he will be a star player and will get fans off their seats: Set to sign

The long awaited signing was finally completed on Thursday evening with a two year contract: Done deal

Robinson doesn't fear the axe

Charlton manager Karl Robinson does not fear Roland Duchatelet's propensity to use the axe on his manager. Indeed, he is closing in on Guy Luzon's ten month record as a Charlton manager under the current regime: Unfazed supremo

Robinson said that the transfers had been done differently and more economically this summer. He also discussed Chris Powell's time as manager.

Robinson hopes to get Stephy Mavididi back from Arsenal on loan. His spell at Charlton was cut short by a serious hamstring injury: Arsenal striker

Ricky Holmes wants a new contract

Player of the season Ricky Holmes wants a new contract. He has twelve months to run on his current deal, but he is not the highest paid player at The Valley, receiving less than Nicky Ajose: New contract

We can't afford to lose Holmes who brings real quality to the team. Indeed, it would be good to make him captain. Over to you, Katrien. Deploy those negotiating skills.

Karl Robinson is keen to bring Stephy Mavididi, recovering from injury, back to The Valley on loan: Mavididi

Robinson blames the players

Karl Robinson has turned to Volume 2 of his Big Book of Excuses and blamed the players (the subtitle of the chapter is 'How to Lose the Dressing Room'). Some of them are insufficiently brave, lack bottle and don't deserve to wear the shirt: Players lack bottle

Robinson said that he wished he could say how deep problems Charlton were. We can all agree with that and 200 disgruntled ex-employees will be making the point in Belgium at the weekend.

According to a tweet from Richard Cawley of the SLP, Johnnie Jackson has said that some players are 'not giving their all.'

Stephy Mavididi is out for the rest of the season, a great shame as he looked useful: Mavididi

'Now you know what you've been missing'

This was the comment of Steve from Petts Wood after I witnessed my first live game at The Valley since my operation in December.

The goal conceded to Bury was a defensive shambles, and I did not see how we were going to score a reply. Admittedly, as Karl Robinson commented after the game, we created some chances, the best falling to Lee Novak in the second half, but we were unable to take advantage of them. Robinson, however, thought that we did enough to win and that the team's mentality was better than against Oxford: Created enough to win

There seems to be a lack of pattern in the play and organisation in the team. The midfield seems to disappear completely at times. If one is going to play with one up front, the support needs to arrive more quickly. Novak looked increasingly frustrated as the game wore on.

Mavididi was the one play on the pitch with a touch of flair and some pace and it was not good to see him stretchered off at the end with a hamstring injury. Forster-Caskey has also picked up a hamstring injury.

Curiously, the announced attendance was the same as for the football for a fiver match against Rochdale. Clearly the programme which generates the attendances had a glitch.

Karl Robinson said that we are now hitting the post or the bar an average of two times a game. Unfortunately, there are no prizes for that unlike the £6,500 nearly won by the fan who came close to hitting the bar at half time. It was one of the best moments of the game.

Arsenal striker in on loan?

Richard Cawley of the SLP reckons that Charlton will secure the signature of highly rated Arsenal striker Stephy Mavididi on a loan deal: Mavididi

Championship and other League One clubs are said to be interested, as well as clubs in Europe. However, the loan path from Arsenal to Charlton is a well trodden one.
